Job done. I would go Passat or Mondeo. Always found VW seats more comfortable than Ford personally, so probably the Passat but haven't sat in current models of either. The Passat is a saloon and the Mondeo is available as a hatch. Does that matter to you?

This confuses me how do you know if its a hatch or saloon? To me all long cars with 5 doors have been a saloon but i see some being called a hatchback and they look nothing like what i image a hatchback to be i.e. focus, leon, Mini

Really? Doing big mileage, I'd take a saloon over a hatch every day of the week, hatches tend to be noisier on the road as a solid rear parcel shelf in a saloon is much better at isolating noise than moulded plastic/covered in fluffy stuff hatchback parcel shelf.

Going to throw this out there...........Citroen DS5. Loads of gadgets, uber comfy, reasonably cheap to run! And not many around!

Saloon means the rear glass doesn't move with the boot. Thus the original Mini is a saloon, the Skoda Octavia is a hatchback.

I think the Mondeo is available as both, it certainly used to be. Like-for-like, saloons tend to be quieter because there's less rubber seals.

Fine option, but not one of the options on op's company car list by all accounts.

According to the Ford UK site your options are hatchback or estate....not surprising though as Britain tends to buy way more hatchbacks than saloons, to the extent that there are a lot of saloon variants that never reached the UK officially (Nissan Tilda (?) being one IIRC)
The £29k Vignale is 4 door or estate http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-offici...

Got to sat that looks smart, Mondeo's are a good drive with Passat Superb etc being around the same money I'd take the Ford.

Think im going for the mondeo seems to have more equipment as standard whereas the passat i might end up with a good one without something essential such as cruise control

Will the focus titanium 1.6 tdi be too tedious to drive on the roads?, i.e. will the lack of power/torque frustrate

For what it's worth, you can retrofit cruise control to most VAG cars just by replacing the control stalk.

If I may suggest the Volvo V40 or V60. They tend to be a Bit nicer than the equivalent Ford but had access to the same parts. Definitely better seats.

Personally I had the choice to go Volvo. Otherwise I would have got a Ecoboost Mondeo. One thing I found VERY off putting was the amount of noise made by the Electronic hand brake/Hill start control on the Passat. Seems to be on anything using that VW system but oddly not on the S4 I drove. Also the "old" Passat and Mondeo are not as up to datw on the Audio/Bluetooth. My Iphone plays music and has phone integration on the Volvo via Buletooth. The Passat only answered the phone and the Mondeo seemed to be that only as well.

I've been looking at cars in that sector as my next company car and have shortlisted the Mazda 6.
Seems well spec'd and low costs.

The latest one is certainly a nice looking thing.

With the new Mondeo:
  • Petrol = choice of hatchback or estate
  • Diesel = choice of hatchback or estate
  • Hybrid = saloon only
So technically it is available in all 3 bodystyles. The hybrid version is an import of the Fusion sold in the States, re-engineered for Europe. I believe that the hatchback and estate versions were developed specially for Europe.

On the OP's question - the OP mentions that the car is roughly a year old so it might be the previous version of the Mondeo/Passat that he is confronted with. If so, I would go for the Passat, because it's comfier over long distances. OTOH, if it's the latest version, I would go with the Mondeo.

Just a quick q. When you say high miles? If you're talking 15k miles, then go with the Mondeo. It'll be more fun to drive more of the time. If you're doing over 25k then go for the Passat. Not only will it be more relaxing to drive, you get in at one end and get out the other without realising how far you've gone or how long you e been sat there. When you're doing big miles dull is good.
