VW boss confirms gesture control technology for facelifted Golf hatchback, due late next year

“The interior features a preview of future VW interior technologies, with smartphone applications redefined for automotive use,” Neußer told Auto Express. “The gesture control will become reality in the Golf at the end of next year.”

The cabin will become largely “button-less”, with the functions not able to be operated via gesture control being accessed on the new digital displays which will feature hepatic feedback.

Surely they're solving a problem that doesn't exist by adding cost and ruinous repairs.

Does anyone know if this will actually make it in? Or just into a concept?

Does that mean single- and two-finger salutes will result in the car heading for the nearest waste disposal site where the driver will be deposited in a suitable skip?

That's going to thrill all the old people who drive Golf's. laugh

The new Honda Jazz has some of this too.

I can't even be bothered using steering wheel controls - it's much easier to just twiddle a knob.

It is only a matter of time.

This does create an opportunity for a smaller volume manufacturer to keep everything simple and 'analogue'. Purists will pay good money if the product is right. I know I would!

So much for safer driving with both hands on the steering wheel....

Bad idea IMHO.. unless its all done through face gurning gestures hehe

You could be driving down a road and see a mate walking past - wave to him and the windscreen wipers go crazy !! could be a comedy value there but..

Surely it would be cheaper to repair as it would generally be software related. In essence they are removing moving parts.

I'm not really fussed about it either way. gadgets don't feature that highly for me when i buy a car.

No, if you get the gestures wrong, it drives you to the clinic.

At the heart of the gesture-control system is a 3D camera mounted in the headliner near the rearview mirror. The gesture controls we demo’d could be used to open and close the sunroof, call up power-seat controls on the central touch screen, and more. To initiate touch controls, the user simply holds a hand aloft near the headliner until a dedicated menu appears on-screen; they then swipe their pointed index finger through the air to scroll through this menu, and a forceful “button push” motion selects the desired menu.
So instead of simply pushing an actual button on the dash you now have to put your hand in the air and perform some sort of sign language into the rear-view mirror, all the while watching a menu screen on the dash to find the control you're looking for?

April 1st was last month, surely?

You could say much the same about many features of modern cars, IMO.

No longer a drivers car ,they saw to that when they went dsg .
Seems that the purests out there will have to keep retro, old school cars to feel involved.

I'm still highly suspicious of touch screens as my experience is that a) they don't work that well in the first place and b) after a few years they stop working completely. Gesture control just seems to me to be the next step toward having something superficially impressive that doesn't work. On the other hand, the buttons on assorted cars and electronic good of 20 and more years old still work as intended. Technology for technology's sake if you ask me.

And look how distracting they are for drivers, even without being the main way to control ancillary functions of the car.

VW have announced that following trials in Italy, a special knobby version will continue to be available there and FIAT say that they won't build knobless cars smile
