I do not get out much at the moment, but here in Aylesbury neither car seem common.

Im staggered at the £250 a month lease cost for an R though! Seems quite a bargain! I may have to investigate.

Tons of new-ish R's and GTD's around Aberdeen but I can't remember the last time I spotted a new style GTi.

I parked up this morning, reversed in and there was yet another behind me, a grey one, the others are all blue.

I suppose VW arent all that bothered, it probably costs a fair percentage of a Golf R to make a bog spec Match special edition, a GTI wont cost much more to make than that and an R gets a couple of extra driveshafts and a rear diff and they are flying out of the door.

Yes, having seen the amount of Golf R's around, I'd be surprised if they were even selling the diesels these days! And it's not just the nice blue colour they do, I've seen loads in grey and red too, so I suppose it's a case of 'you'll take what you're given at £250 a month'. It'll certainly be interesting to see what happens with this flood of stock when they land on the used market.

By comparison, I see far fewer M135i's, which strikes me as a much more interesting car in any event!

Can't help but think my neighbor is one of these when you do the math on leased deals.

He purchased one about three weeks (Not leased) £31k and I made the comment about the incredible leasing deals that they offer on the R. He was aware of the good deals but said it's simply not how he likes to buy cars.

The Golf R was added to a list of Eight other cars(A very nice selection) so I only can presume in his position what he looses at time of sale is here or there to him.

But if you're watching the pennies it appears to me a No-brainer not to lease.

What I want to see is the GTE. Of all the Golfs, that is the most interesting.

When I was looking, the spec I wanted was £35.5k+ and they refused to discount by the £900 I wanted. So I walked away. Glad I did now. Their sales manager has saved me a fortune by not buying his car!

I have a GTI, mine is purchased, not leased or PCP'd - I bought it over the R for a few reasons. firstly and the most important was the GTI was on release when i was looking, the R was due for release about 6 months later, didnt want to wait.

I wanted quite a few options, list on my car was about 35k, i got it for 30k - at the time dealers were not entertaining discounts on the R, so that would have been a wait, or a 37k commitment.

There are a few things i'm not keen on on the R, i liked the twin center exhausts on my R32, dont like the quad pipes on a 2 litre. I like the red lights inside (on the doors) on the GTI, not so keen on the blue. i'm not really a fan of the std wheels on the GTI, but i really dislike the ones on the R, i also dont really like the chrome effect mirror housings.

I think the GTI looks quite nice with the red lines from the front, i think the R looks a bit bland.

I do however miss the 4x4.

all in, the GTI is quite a nice place to be, its plenty fast enough, returns good MPG, less likely to find someone in my house looking for the keys and is quite a rare car..

I don't know what dealer network it came from but we are Midlands,it's not highly specked(In his words) but I do know it's black and that was the price he said he paid.it was only yesterday I chatted with him. He ordered it 8 months ago is another thing he told me.

Think you did the right thing by walking away... If you are interested in where he got it from PM me and when I see him again will ask where he got it from at that price. But to my eyes even at £31k it looks a better option to lease. It was the 1st time we have chatted for a few months and it may be that long again but happy to ask when we speak again.

Might catch him out that he's leased itbiggrin

Sadly if you read Autocars recent review of the GTE, its not a great prospect after all. I was looking at these with interest as well.

A Tesla style GTE - not hybrid - would be ace, 0-60 in 3 secs, a few hundred mile range, 4wd etc.. might be a few year off just yet though smile

Exactly. And look how the arse fell out of the used prices on those when they were a few years old....

Oh, wait.

I suppose when you can get the flagship model for about £40 a month less than the GTI, most see the R as the best option when it comes to leasing. I also see a lot of GTDs but very, very few GTIs and it's a shame as I really like the GTI. Had a MkV R32 and couldn't really be tempted by the 5 door red Rs on offer right now. Also really do not like the standard alloys on the R either. As a 30 something, I always loved GTIs growing up and would be tempted by the latest model once the second hand ones start appearing at a price more within my range.
