In response to the OP, I'd look towards a Golf R or if you want that feeling where the car is moving around you constantly then I'd look towards the brand new Impreza.
Nope. Neither comes close. The Golf is inert and aloof, and the Scoob feels like it has an anvil nailed to the front bumper compared to the Evo.

And anyone classifying the Golf R, A45 AMG and S3 in with the Evo hasn't driven both. The German cars are inert, understeering, poor approximations of the real thing.
That's what I'm finding with my audi, quite the let down frown

Depends which Imprezas you're comparing it with, the DCCD cars are very pointy. I've heard that Spec-C owners tend to find Evos a bit dull and overly computer-assisted. wink

Spec C's are in a different category to me when discussing Impreza's cloud9

Although if Evo's feel a little computer assisted they have the RS range. These are the lightweight models, no abs, no ayc, no power steering, no air-con etc...

So what is their application, someone who wants to go fast, look good but who's inexperienced and needs understeer and more safety devices that you cant turn off ?!

What, no zero fighter suggestions wink

Handling? Really?

If you want a lesson in handling, look at something like an Elise/vx220 or even an m3. If you want a car the grips and makes the most of that, evo/impreza/audi ttrs/golf R/merc a45 amg
yes

Mitsubishi (as well as many all wheel drive offerings) generate absolutely mind bending lateral cornering forces, and use lots of clever gadgetry to allow entertaining slip angles, and provide a good amount of feedback to the driver.

I'm not sure that what they do could be classed as "handling", however. Certainly not in the sense that a Lotus might.

What's missing from the current German offerings is the adjustability and hooligan element of the evo family .... Nothing that I'm aware of, or experienced, does that like an evo

Will an evo x do 27mpg on a run? Does it have silly service intervals?
Service intervals are 10,000 miles.

It almost certainly will not do 27mpg though - how many miles do you do? 2 or 3mpg less isn't gonna bust your bank account surely?

They are max tax territory too.

I'd agree with that I've had a few Spec C and Evo RS/9GT models and they are very similar to drive (terrific) and much better than the regular Evo's/Sti models. Sadly there is nothing like these made any more.

Modern versions of 4wd fast saloons like the Golf R are great but these cars have moved on to a different segment, refined all rounders, which means heavy and numb compared to a good Evo or Impreza. We need a new Spec C / Evo Gt/Rs but would anyone buy one?

Not much on the road can compare to a GSR variant EVO with Active Yaw Controlled rear diff.

Now matter how many times you think the rear outside tyre is going to break traction and drift out, it just keeps on gripping.

Once you have owned one, anything without it feels too loose.

Evo X with an LPG conversion? That's what I plan on replacing Galant VR4 with in a year or so. I get 16mpg in the VR4 on LPG, but the price per mile is half that compared to running it on V Power.

A friend of mine has the Evo 8 and his exact dilemma is what to replace it with that is newer and offers the same driving experience.

He's been saying that for a year and a half now and simply cannot find a single car that can fill the Evos shoes. Frankly, I agree with him.

In my opinion, the Audis etc mentioned are designed for people who want a car to go fast with minimum fuss or involvement. Whilst they're performance cars by the numbers, they're not performance cars by any other measure (e.g. driver involvement). The Evo on the other hand is a rally homologation special: a 4WD performance car that feels alive in the hands and entertains the driver. Audi know what they're doing building cars, so I assume that are clearly never meant to entertain or involve the driver in any way other than the roller coaster style sensations of going fast.

As it happens, neither car is to my taste, but nevertheless I can see a world of difference between them. The Evo is like a 4WD Integra R, whereas the Audi is like a 4WD, well, Audi! biggrin

I had a 330S with Prodrive suspension upgrade before the Evo X and, no matter how much I fiddled with the DCCD, it was still too understeer orientated in extremis. They can't hide the engine and half the gearbox being entirely in front of the front axle. Earlier Evos were even better. The X was just far, far too heavy. With SST, it's over 1600kg.

I couldnt possibly comment having never driven an Evo. I'd say my wheelie bin hands quite well and goes around corners like its on rails, which is about as relevant to this as probably most of the posts on here from people who have never driven the car's they're saying are or aren't as good as an Evo hehe
