GO drive a TVR Chimaera. Actually, just go START a TVR Chimaera. You soon know which car is the one you want.... Roof off, good speed, plenty of boot space for shopping, what's not to love?
Or if you don't want to spend all of your budget, have a look at a TVR s series. All the sound and experience; some would even say better as its more basic and less insulating. It's less powerful so you get more of a chance to drive it hard through the Rev range. Think of it as a mx5 turned up to 11. Unless you choose to go for a v8s, in which case you'll spend all your budget but have a huge grin on your face Jasandjules said:

I'm in the same boat but could stretch to £12k and keep coming back to the chimaera or 996.
Done just 1200 miles on my RSV in the last 3 years and I'm trying to think of something with some presence for weekends with the wife to replace it.

I've always fancied a TVR as a toy as well but am I alone in being put off by pictures like this?
Well I've had TVRs for close to 20 years now. Never stopped upside down... As to the TVR S - they are ok. Nowhere near as fast as a Chimaera (I had an S as my first TVR) and a 2.9l V6 - you don't quite get the V8 rumble in the same way.... TBH if a 400SE or something is possible, that would also be nice. BUT a Chimaera is just such a sexy best.
Twin turbo mkiv Supra manual (my sub £10K 'toy' pick right now- endless aftermarket upgrade potential, reliable route to serious power, only Jap car of the era which has a genuinely decent cabin)
R33 GTR- still arguably the 'unloved' generation of GTR, R33 is to GTRs what the E36 is to M3s, depreciation-free now
7 x tidy mk1 MX5s, or 2 BBRs + money for consumables
996 911 prefacelift tintop manual (reckon there are 'safe' ~£10K examples out there- buy carefully and don't worry about internet scariness)
987 Boxster (Joe Public has no idea these are available sub £10K if such things matter to you)
Z3M Roadster (overlooked gem imho, watch Tiff treating it like the little tart that it is- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Vocpe0eZUWg )
Z4 coupe
E46 M3 manual
E39 M5
Late S2000 and a holiday
350Z manual and a holiday (Benidorm, I imagine)
TVRs mentioned already, less enamoured with them having recently experienced an AJPV8 Cerbera (borderline kit car quality/ fit & finish up close, interiors in particular wear very badly)
Series 2 Elise (find afew quid extra down the back of the couch, look quite 'exotic' in the fibreglass)
VX220
MR-S with 2ZZ/ Camry V6 transplant, plenty left in the kitty for further performance mods
EK9 Type R (nice little investment at this point, first-hand experience has seared it into my memory)
Unmolested, low-miles DC2 Integra (another investment, patience required- import one?)
DC5 Integra
Monaro
Some Merc or other with a ginormous engine- are there any worth having at this price point that won't inevitably bork ruinously? Rarely if ever have a manual box- a must for me
Caterham/ Westie etc would ultimately be my choice if looking for a true 'toy'/ track car

I'm sure I read somewhere that the picture of that Griff upside down fell off a transporter.
However I have seen pictures of crashed driven ones and it's not a pleasant view to the eyes.
As to the topic of 10k toy, then I'm another one that would recommend the Chimaera. There are so many positives that overrule the negatives on this beautiful looking and well appreciated by the masses little beauty.
A complete full blog since my ownership of 23 months of all costs is in my profile to give an idea of what running costs are like. No breakdowns in the Chimaera has followed the pattern of No breakdowns in my V8S or S2.. Makes me wonder why I have this breakdown cover
