stationary car hits cyclist
Discussion
I confess to doing this myself
Only mine was into the back of an artic lorry and it bloody hurt.
Its easy for a non cyclist to laugh about this but its quite easy to do, especially if you've been out for a long ride and are physically beat.
Mine was a horrible morning, wind and rain lashing down into my face, I had my head down against the wind, went round a roundabout put my head down again and unfortunately for me there was a lorry parked up on the side with the back out over a cycle lane. Now this is not a busy cycle path, its a long empty stretch of road and I had seen the lorry in the distance, but it all looked off the road from the angle I saw it at. My forearm wedged down under the trailer and I flew out over the handlebars into the middle of the road. Luckily no cars were coming as its a fast bit of road.
I broke the tip off my shoulder blade. Funny now though.

I can well imagine that to be true but it's not a defence. It's unreasonable to expect someone who's exerting themselves to be as fresh as a daisy but if the fatigue is to the extent that the person is mentally incapacitated then one must question them being on public roads where 3rd parties are about.Motor vehicles have the potential to do more damage but bicycles can still do damage. If a car driver or motorcyclist driver was out of it there would be serious consequences.
It may not be illegal but it's pretty irresponsible to ride yourself to the state where you ride straight in to a stationary object.

This is pretty much why I thoroughly believe cyclists should have some sort of insurance.
Over 100,000 cyclists do have insurance too.
Also not sure where that random statistic has been pulled from.

Well this car driver really needs to be taken to task - could have killed the cyclist quite easily.
people just need to learn to dive properly and be safe around cyclists as they really are vulnerable and car drivers are protected in metal boxes...

Is the passive aggressive attitude really needed? People have accidents like that all the time. People hit stationary cars, run in to houses. The most dangerous place to be is on the hard shoulder of a motorway because lorries hit cars. The attitude just causes more aggression and pointless anger on the road.people just need to learn to dive properly and be safe around cyclists as they really are vulnerable and car drivers are protected in metal boxes...

That car should have been fitted with sophisticated warning devices so the idiot driver could have avoided smashing that poor cyclist off his bike, how many more poor cyclists have to suffer these kinds of accidents before we protect them?
Awaits an EU ruling that states all new cars built must have exterior airbags fitted.Alucidnation said:
There were another couple yesterday that did exactly the same thing, and in the same place!
And I'm sure there will be a few more along in a little while. This numpty cyclist can't even crash into a car properly:

Passive aggressive now ? That was not an accident - that was pure incompetence on the part of the knob on the cycle. You seen him ride for some amount of time before he actually run into the car that was stationary and parked. It had not just stopped it had not done anything untoward.
The cyclist could have killed himself. through not paying attention to the road in front of him.

Pretty accurately describes the comments about "the car driver needing to be taken to task". Passive aggressive and juvenile. You clearly have a problem with cyclists for some reason.

Who invented 'passive aggressive' and why is it cropping up in PH threads when nothing to say

Awaits an EU ruling that states all new cars built must have exterior airbags fitted. What is it with cyclists headbanging the rear of cars?! I did this when I was 10 on my bike, although I was hit from behind by an old duffer, which propelled me through the rear window of a Mini Clubman. Poor Clubman owner wasn't around so the Fire Brigade ripped his doors off so I could be extricated.
On a very quiet early turn my crewmate & I were parked up in a side road watching the world go past.
It was a lovely sunny morning & visibility was good.
We saw a pedal cyclist coming up the main road. Head down & legs a blur.
More or less opposite us & on his side of the road was a builders skip.
We fully expected him to ride round it & carry on his way.
I'm still at a loss as to how we managed to keep straight faces as we took his details after helping him out of the skip.
Other than minor cuts & bruises - and a serious dent in his pride - he was able to carry on his way.
