I haven't driven a M135i, but, I do have a Golf R. I guess performance levels are similar as they fall into the category of hi powered hot hatches.

I am not sure where the "Junior supercar" tag comes from. I think that is over egging the case for these vehicles. However, it would take a genuine supercar to show these hot hatches a clean pair of heels in real world conditions. That still doesn't warrant the tag of "Junior Supercar" and does a disservice to the real thing.

I was surprised recently at the pace of a 125d
As good as that is it is not a competitor to the M135i.

One does 0-100 in 11 seconds the other 16+ seconds worlds apart.
In gear performance is a lot closer than you would imagine though
Immaterial, when one sounds like a proper car and the other sounds like a piece of farm equipment wink
I'm no derv fan, just merely giving our OP some alternative views.

As for the noise then the M135i is 'OK' at best in my opinion. It sounds fairly meaty but that's about it. Theres no S50/S54 type wail of old associated with a real M division car. Just the usual muted sound from a blown N55 - the 1 M Coupe sounds better imho

They are supremely quick I give you that. I had a JB4 on mine and by golly it was ridiculously fast - just kept getting error codes.

Surely, it comes down to what you are paying for the car. Some of the early lease deals made these cars stonking value.
yes

Those deals meant that BMW0-GB shifted as many M135 in the first 18 months than it had done of the previous generation E82 135i in the whole of it's 5 year lifespan as they never 'offered' any such deals on those - hence their relative rarity.
Wow, never knew that. Being a hatch might have helped a bit, but still. Looks like the equally amazing cash deals yielded similar or even better value such are the residuals atm. Not sure for how long though.

I agree it doesn't have the traction of the Golf but it has better lateral grip IME, although it's difficult to compare.

Pro: Junior supercar

Con: after owning an M135i, only another supercar will suffice, trade in for an F40 or a Venturi Atlantique or something.

Well they are just shy of 200bhp/tonne.
The new RS6 isn't that give or take 300bhp/tonne?

They are pretty much the same. some owners who have had both have remakred the LCI feels smoother. The only difference really is that the cars equipped with pro media sat nav have the GPS aware gearbox (auto).

If you are alluding to the power hike, the last of the pre-LCI have that too. Early cars had a pneumatic wastegate, later cars have the electronic wastegate - electronic wastegate cars will have the same output as the LCI.

Just picked up my manual 3-dr LCI at 1.00pm today. There are unconfirmed rumours that they have put the M235i suspension settings. Which would explain why the car seems to turn in more eagerly and roll less than I remembered. It is not quite as ugly now, not that I care. It's a genuinely quick car and the engine is nowhere near as obviously turboed as some say. Not explored the chassis, brakes or rev range though so too early to tell. It seems like a brilliant all rounder but probably not for pointandsquirters.

Agree and I love how aggressive the lower front bumper looks.

I actually prefer flat white...metallic white is a tiny bit bling to my eyes.
