You have to admire the way that Hexagon have managed the market of the Z8 to drive the prices up as high as they are.

Period reviews of the Z8 had it trounced by the Merc SL.

They aren't even that rare, they made getting on for 6000 of them.
Wow, that's quite alot.

There's only 1320 RHD BMW E63 M6 models in existence by way of comparison. So my car is a lot rarer biggrin

If I was a rich Arab I'd snap this up. One of the best looking BMWs ever.
However I am not a rich Arab, I am Sam from the West Midlands so I'll stick with my shoddy 318 SE.

Errrrr, can I have a TVR Chimaera and a small house instead, please?

Never seen one in the flesh, so I guess I can't really comment, but I've personally never really been sold on the looks of these things. Each to their own, I guess

Love the Z8. It's very understated but when time is taken to appreciate it the car is stunning. The rarity adds to the allure.

The only car I like more is the E Type.

If you were a rich Arab you'd buy a BMW 507 and laugh at people driving Chris Bangle's retro-copy.

As has been said, it was supposed to handle like a pile of poo and although pretty (unusual for a German car), it's ludicrously priced. I'd take a good Cobra rep and spunk the rest on coke and hookers.

These do very little for me, and there aren't too many M-powered BMWs I say that about

Absolutely nuts, Ive had my E39 M5 for 10 years, driven every week of the year and 70k miles (in my ownership), love it, currently worth about the same as a 5 year old Ford Fiesta!! Subjectively I just do not get who would pay over £80k for a Z8, let alone £180k, when various Aston Martin V12s, Bentleys, Ferraris and Lambos of different vintages can be had for much less. Just does not compute for me!!

There appears to be an inverse correlation between mechanical complexity and appreciating value with sports cars. Naturally aspirated RWDs with a manual gearbox seem to be the way forward, the F1 being the trump card IMO.

That's not so surprising - rightly or wrongly, there's a lot of hysteria about that such cars aren't going to be widely available for much longer, killed off by emissions regulations, rising fuel prices and the eminent EV revolution. Or something.

Way I see it, all this proves that there's still a serious demand for old school sports cars even in the face of changing times, and while they might be a little more niche than they were in the past, so long as the demand is there the market will provide. The Cayman gt4 and the reception it's received is a case in point.

Its going to be a gradual realization of this that bursts the bubble, I think.

Pretty little roadster. I saw one at my local Waitrose the other day. It didn't get much attention at all though........
maybe the most discrete £180k car?
a neighbor of mine has owned his z8 from new - I'm not sure he's even aware they are so expensive these days
I've seen one up close and I can't even remember if I took the time to check out the interior. They're neat because they are uncommon, but I'd never have guessed they would appreciate. Mainly, because there isn't much about them to appreciate.

I stepped out of one of these about three hours ago. Looking at it as a classic, it is absolutely superb. A couple of hours earlier I was in an XK150, which sounded glorious but was clearly from another age where space, safety and performance were not as we understand them today. As a newtimer classic, the Z8 ticks all the boxes. Not only gorgeous, but as soon as you open the door you are hit by the smell of leather, then the quality of the materials, then the bespoke feel, the stitching and unique (clearly low volume) switches. Do you remember the roadtests complaining about the steering? Compared with anything modern (including a 991 911, arguably even a 997) the feel through the rim is revitalising. Don’t worry about the understeer; you’d have to be going pretty quick to notice and it isn’t a sportscar - even the ride is comfortable. Open the window, or take the roof off, and just listen to the incredible, totally natural sounds ripping through the air. It’s everything a great classic should be, I couldn’t stop smiling. Thank you BMW.

So, to sum up its a not actually all that great, sort of fat Z3 with an E39 V8 in it, and they want 180 grand for it ?

Ok, never owned one and never will, I am perhaps being a bit unfair, it is quite a nice looking thing but to me, it looks like a 40 grand car, not knocking on the door of 200.

Sometimes I think certain models get chosen, not due to being that fantastic, just that they become a commodity to move money around with, a known quantity due to the limited-ish run.
