If my MPS sells on Thursday then it looks like I'll be starting the hunt for an E39 M5 after June 25th!

What about an Alpina B10 4.6 V8 rare normally well looked after & in budget.

Or just in budget a C55 AMG I know you've discounted the E55 but this is a good alternative.

If you don't mind two doors.

Just thought I'd give you a few more before you go M5 hunting wink

Is the M5 going to be your only car?

I've been in this situation.

Bought an S55 AMG, absolutely mental car (55 kompressor engine)

Had a modified B5 S4.

Decided i wanted to daily a V8 so bought a D2 S8 for pennies, LPG'd it - backbox delete - havent looked back...

Those are some good calls. I aren't a fan of the alpina, it has the wrong gearbox for me. Same with the Merc's, though I do like a supercharged Merc! Trouble is the mrs really doesn't lol

Very left field. They do nothing for me sadly though the W8 engine is interesting. I knew someone who had one and it sounded good but never looked that fast.

Yes it will be. I like the S8 but i think id go for the V10 because V10 lol. But i know they're slower midrange than an E39. It'll be my second M5 and hopefully it'll be one I keep for a while to come

Id love a D3 S8, just too much for me at the moment. I had a 4.2 tdi D3 sport and that was lovely.

Ahh its one of those old chesnuts, the "sold the car shouldnt have sold the car want it back" scenario. I sometimes get like that with my old cummins ram - then i realise how much of a dog it was!! Good fun though!

I must admit ive never been a beemer fan, but i find myself more and more often looking at them. Especially older ones like the E39 M5, alpinas etc

For now though, the S8 will do. Its not massively quick (360bhp) but it has enough grunt to overtake and the build quality is immense. Also the LPG makes dailying a V8 bearable.

They aren't cheap, but they do look pretty decent inside, and V10 lol. Not a patch on the S85 V10 in the M5 imo, but still, a V10 and still sounds awesome! biggrin

I do like beemers, but aside from a few of the older ones, havent really had a desire to own one, other than an M5. 360bhp isnt that much of a slouch mind! They weigh less than an E39 M5, but I think its the auto box that off the mark stops them being quicker than they are (at least on paper).

If it has to be a M5 this looks like a good one:

Arrrrgh! While I know my modded E55 will leave an M5 for dust I still keep looking at these. There used to be one that prowled around near where I used to live a few years back that just got me wanting one.

I've never driven an E55, is yours the kompressor model? I just don't think I could live with an auto again as a fun car otherwise I would consider one, despite what the mrs says!

Trust me you could live with an auto with that torque & bhp at your disposal, you'll be fine as a side bar my SL55 is producing 696.5bhp at the crank do I mind that it's not Manual hell no.......... The only manual I have are my bikes.

Now this is a grand over Budget after haggling but it only has 51k & FSH

Surely E39 M5s are currently at their lowest price point? I can only see them going up from now on!

Wow that ebay one above is a bargain!

Mines the kompressor version and they are nuts. Just like above mines pushing out more than standard ponies, last dyno was 687 but they are lighter than the other 55 variants so go a bit faster wink

I'm looking at going back to a fixed pulley again though, which will reduce power to about 610ish but makes the car completely mental. The normal pulleys have a clutch and only really kick in around 1700rpm, the fixed pulleys are noticeably more responsive too.

It's all well and good adding more power but if you still have an auto when what you really crave is the interaction of a manual, it won't matter.

2 years ago would have been their lowest. Finding reasonably priced ones now is quite difficult.

They are a nice place to be. But i must admit the standard D4 interior looks immense. Never really paid any attention to the V10 M5, perhaps i should have a nosey!

Speaking of off the mark is a weird thing. The S8 has a feather light throttle, really takes some getting used too (Mrs did have a few drinks in her lap) but its a real good idea, means you can tap the throttle and jump into gaps at junctions. On the other hand though, plunge it and it doesnt feel massively quick until the revs pick up.

The S55 had a dull throttle which was a pain, you would push nothing happens push harder and all 500bhp would light spinning the rears, engaging the traction control and make you look a right plumb!

BMW warranty on that car also with a view to extend. Could come in very handy if rod bearings or VANOS rear their ugly heads. Clean with a great spec list, too. If you give them a call and give a deposit I'm sure they'd hold it until the 25th for you.

Rod bearings aren't a common issue and neither is vanos failure. I don't know where people pick this up from
