If you enjoyed good writing CAR was the best choice for decades - that it is until the wheels started coming off in the mid- late 90s. It is now almost unreadable, apart from the odd piece by Gavin Green - most of it writers rely on cliche-heavy drivel . Superficial, trying (and failing )to be funny and aimed at people who can't cope with reading more than 250 words without a big picture to look at - dire.

Always remember Russell Bulgin and LJK Setright writing for Car at its peak and both sadly no longer with us.

I usually pick up PPC and Retro Car magazines. I used to get Performance BMW but they rarely have anything in their that I like nowadays. Maybe it's my age? I also get Evo occasionally but it's all a bit modern and expensive for me.
I used to prefer TOTAL BMW mag until it finished
Always felt like it was printed on loo roll though.

Shame there's no Classic or Retro BMW magazine.

You're right about that hehe

The paper quality wasn't great towards the end.

When both mags ran PERFORMANCE BMW always seemed more targetted at lurid paint jobs, crazy U.S. modded cars and the like......but since TOTAL BMW ended they have more interesting (to me) stuff in - handling mods, how to guides etc rather than candy flip paint and frenched rear lights etc

I have an Evo subscription and in general it's pretty good, but there is still an obvious bias towards new and often more expensive vehicles.

There just isn't enough road and group tests of older cars, but I suspect the co-ordination, hassle and faffery trying to arrange drives of readers vehicles is much greater than accepting a fast fleet execu-barge from Audi or Merc.

I suspect so too - a lot easier to have factory fresh standard press cars, a known quantity, that can have the door handles driven off them rather than 3 or 4 reader supplied cars in unknown standards of repair plus perhaps mods that skew any meaningful comparisons. Not to mention having to bear in mind that any breakage on test is likely to be a problem

Practical Performance Car, Practical Classics and Autocar.

I have little, and fast diminishing interest in modern cars, to be honest. Numb, soulless things generally. That said, I remember my dad saying the same thing 30 years ago, so it's obviously age! smile

Hi folks

I'd like to resurrect this thread. With kids finally past the continuous attention phase but me also not wanting to be staring at a screen all the time I've decided it's time to go back to magazine reading. Trouble is, which one. Especially valid on a Sunday morning

I'd gone off Evo as they concentrated too much on supercars. I'd like some normality too so wondering what's decent these days? Weekly like autocar or car magazine? Top gear?

Car Magazine has always worked for me, it's back at the top of its game right now. Shame that the current paper quality is poor though.

Even though I have the E46 M3 in the garage I'm not quite ready for any classic car mags yet.

Just grabbed an old Evo (issue 200) from the garage and just had the best hours reading ever. It's so easy to forget how well written the articles were and how captivated you get.

YouTube is great and the internet is great but you skip so much. With a part magazine you read about cars you would normally just skip by

MDMA .

I buy it regularly too. Just wish they wouldn't keep banging on about investment and values all the time. It's like the 911 sub forum.

Yes, one of my favourite mags too
Interesting to see the comparisons between them reviewed new and reviewed 20/30 years on
Agree with MDMA though - buy cars because you like them rather than if you think you can make some money on them.

I really struggle to get on with this publication. I love the concept of it, but I find it a terrible read. Normally done with it after a very short scan through, and rarely buy it anymore

Old Performance Cars are still my favourite browse, even these days

I agree, it’s a pale imitation of what it was but I still think it’s the best all rounder. Not on Readly any longer which is irritating. I know it doesn’t get you away from screens, but this app is fantastic for skipping through lots of car mags and just reading the content you like without spending a fortune on the print versions. Another vote for Modern Classics though, although I’d agree the articles aren’t always as interesting as the cars.

Have subscribed since forever but am starting to lose the excitement when it drops through the letter box

And this months twin test of the £36,400 M135i vs the £50,500 AMG A45 was just pointless

Cheers
