This might be an odd suggestion, but the Fiat Stilo 3 dr is well in budget, they look great (almost like a coupe) and are a good drive!

Suzuki Swift Sport, Renaultsport Twingo 133, Fiesta Zetec S, Mini Cooper S

None of those should break the bank insuring at 26. I enjoyed my time in a Twingo, the swift is near identical in terms of performance. The Ford and Mini are a slight step up and could be a bit cheaper to buy?

As an aside, what would be the cheapest route to rear wheel drive? I'm guessing MX5? (You could easily have an MX5 for your budget)

Suzuki Ignis Sport still a good bet. Prices seem to be at an all time low for them these days. £800 will get you somethhing with around 100k on the clocks in reasonable condition with MOT.

Plenty over here (he wants the car for when comes back) can be had for peanuts. All because people want a German badge and think that because a few Italian cars rusted in the 70's they are still rusty now.

Cheap to insure, cheap to fix*, looks the part and nice interior. Pretty chuckable (with decent tyres on). The only bad things are the vague steering and interior parts WILL fall off.

• They share the same platform as the Vauxhall Corsa D so share a lot of parts

So what is the overall opinion on MG? Some car friends of mine have advised against the MG ZR 1.4, but to me it doesn't seem too bad?
