"..with a service history nearly as long as the Qur'an.."
Maybe someone at PH can explain this comment? How did the Qur'an suddenly become linked to a car's service history?
Why can't it be? I believe the Qur'an is quite long. What derogatory connotations are people seeing here? Maybe someone at PH can explain this comment? How did the Qur'an suddenly become linked to a car's service history?
in 3 weeks the car is scrap value ,traders usually take a car for a mot with anything less than 6 months to see what it needs to pass ,if it only needs £100 they will get the work done if it needs a lot they sell as is , its a big gamble . even with the number plate shown in the pictures its not worth the transfer ,I don't value the plate at anything except the owner it hardly makes it dateless. even with a full mot I would only pay £600,
Bought my 528i M sport auto 2 and a half years ago for a grand. No history whatsoever. 1 key. Rust on bootlid and back panel. 132000 miles on the clock. I genuinely thought I might get 6 months and 10000 miles out of it so I thought long and hard about whether to LPG it.
It went through 181000 this week. I had to spend an unshedlike £260 on the last service but £140 of that was to fix an irritating oil leak,
Other than that it gets a service every 10k miles ( usually £100 or thereabouts ) and each time it's been motd I've spent another £100.
I LOVE IT. It has never let me down. It's no rocket ship and I never thrash it but it pulls well and goes and stops in a perfectly acceptable manner.
Agree on the colour, just makes it look like a new Audi or BM and who wants that? Oxford Green for the ever so slightly classier shedman ( or lady)!

Good for you! I love these cars too. never owned one, its the one that got away, having nearly bought one twice. And yes they will do high 30s MPG on a run. My mate got 36-38 MPG on a 70 MPH cruise through France. Performance is more than adequate too, but its geared long, so you need to use the gears. 0-100 was 18 secs in a manual. That's the one I'd have as the auto is a fair bit slower, 3.5 secs slower to the ton than a manual according to dear old Autocar, back in the day!!

My Peugeot 309 GTI sipped that very same fuel very happily for a few years. I recall vouchers. And not caring what mpg I got! Happy days!
Ahhh... happy days.Used to carry 40 ltrs in Jerry cans in the boot too on trips back to the UK - only me in the car, but would probably think twice about doing it now!!
A friend's Datsun Cherry ended up as target practice on the range at Sennelager following a BFG test failure, that was possibly the funniest thing ever, and a fitting end for a rancid car...
One of these:
I deeply love my 525TD - very gentle car to live with, yes I spend a bit on it but as I hated the one that followed and the current car is way out of budget I think we'll be together for a long time yet. Not that quick but a very complete car from the end of the era of massively good German cars. Also it's the SE which seems to suit the car much better than the sport - it's a wafting car and the sport suspension etc makes it feel a bit odd.
Oddly I think it's all down to the wipers - the mercs I had with the single blade that was massively engineered to cover the screen were all brilliant, and the E39 has a jumping wiper as well - so there is an odd tip, get cars with strange wipers!

In principle, a great SOTW. However not in white. In addition, I wonder how much work will be required to get it through the MoT (especially given the mileage).
The M52 2.8 is a lovely engine but the high 30s MPG requires a gentle right foot and <70mph cruising speed. Cruise at 75-80mph and you're likely to achieve at mid 30s.
The article mentions Vanos failure, I've not heard of that being a notable issue on these engines. The most important thing is the cooling system - always budget for a potential radiator/thermostat/waterpump refresh if buying an M52 (E39 or E36).

I believe sticky valves were the main issue on the 2.8 but I can't see at being a problem now. For comparison my 535i does high teens around town and I don't hang about, on a run I get high twentys and if the speedo is below 90 I'm stuck in traffic.;)

"Mid-20s in town, mid-30s on a run, and into the 40s on a steady cruise". Who writes this guff? Ex-owner of a low miles, well-shod and maintained 528i SE here-more like 14-18 in town, 22-26 on a run and 29-33 mpg on a steady cruise.
That's odd. I average 18 in town with the 540.I remember these as being really great to drive when they were new or still quite young, but every single one I've driven in the last few years has felt absolutely shagged. The colour does this one no favors but it now looks a very "old fashioned" car inside and out. A lot of metal for your money, and we won't see engines as lovely as that again but wouldn't be my choice for a reliable car for less than a grand.
