White was traditionally BMWs racing colour and a few people in the 90s special ordered it on cars where white wasn't offered at insane rates.

Fairly sure the E39 wasn't offered in white so probably a fairly eccentric first owner

Love my 530i Sport, steep running costs but totally worth it. I spend about £1000 a year maintaining mine. But I don't buy pattern parts and it only goes to a specialist...

Loads of E39s were white. Especially early years.

One pf the best cars ever, striking a nearly perfect balance between comfort, sportiness, size, practicality, all topped off with discreet elegantly sporty looks.
I still miss mine!
This.

I had a facelift E39 530d SE manual, and it was an utterly brilliant car. Did everything so well, and would reach 50mpg on the motorway on cruise control.

The only in the E39's armour is the woeful seats. The sport ones are a bit better, but they are all uncomfortable.

Disagree about the seats. The normal ones are a bit unsupportive but fine for most people most of the time. The sport seats are really comfy - even for my oversized backside!

Yes, I thought the seats were ok. For me the most disappointing feature was the standard stereo.

Having owned an e34 and now an e39, I can vouch for the robustness of these things.

A few months ago I put my e39 through a concrete bollard, down an embankment and into a lake. A few people pulled me out (I was still at work) and it was completely fine, if slightly damp.

Slight dent in the bumper where she bit the bollard off.

I still really fancy an E39 BMW, especially a 528i. Twice I nearly bought one, but was persuaded not to by my wife who hates them...trouble is, being a family car, we both have to be happy with the car we settle on. Dang it....

They don't really feel very fast any more in comparison to modern TDIs which have that punchy torquey delivery, but they are still deceptively brisk considering they have less than 200 BHP pulling over 1.5 tons. A mate had one and said it comfortably pulled to 130 on the M3, leaving an E46 320d floundering in its wake!!

If you can stomach the fuel bill, pick up a 540!

Well, I have verified the M54B22 520i Touring's 139mph top speed... I would have thought the 528i would be comfortably mid-140s, maybe even 150. I know the 530i had to be reined in at 155mph, though I don't think it went much faster delimited.

It's not the support, it's the flat and uncomfortable seat bases that ruin them. It is the general consensus on the 5 series forum too.

Can't say I've ever noticed that being a problem. The E46's seats were worse, just plain too narrow. I'm not generally a fan of old Yank tanks, but I remember a chap I knew in the 70s had a Pontiac Trans Am, and the seats in that were lovely - soft, wide, well-cushioned and decently supportive. The nearest I've had to that was the P6, but the 535i's sport seats run it pretty close.

The E39 is a solid car, great shed, but that interior wood, no, no, no, no, no! Could never understand why the Bavarians kitted their interiors out like a badly designed 70's porn set. vomit

It's not the most wonderful quality stuff, is it! I'm told it is actually real wood, but with that polyester lacquer on it, it looks more fake than the Formica in my Rover (which at least didn't pretend to look real, and suited the car's character - I saw one with a full burr walnut swap some carpenter had done and it looked horrendous).

Just for everyone who cares! If was me who bought this car, it was an absolute peach of a car! No suspension issues, no wobble under braking that was so common with this, the engine was perfect as was the gearbox! Even the body was very straight and very very clean for the miles! Could tell someone cared alot for this car!

Spent a fortune on it but unfortunately sold it for an Audi S4 ! What a mistake!
