Like many classic cars many of the original problems have now been addressed. There are a host of XJS upgrades available that deal with many of the challenges in the chassis and engine. Modern paint technologies look after the rust. Truth is that you could make a perfectly serviceable daily drive so long as you can live with the thirst. Yes it's expensive, but then people were saying that about the strongest E-type values 15 years ago.
I have just bought one for exactly that reason, to run as a daily. It was going to be a V12 too, until I saw the one I bought, a 3.6 manual pre face lift. To my eyes the earlier cars are much more pretty, the later rear light treatment makes the car look arse heavy, although I understand build quality on the later cars was much better.Contemporary road tests weren't that kind to the 928, current ones describe it as a heavy old barge with not much power and mainly dreadful autoboxes. It's also utterly bland and, from the back, downright hideous. The post-facelift XJS, on the other hand, is a really nice-looking thing, and the XJS always drove well (albeit some were also hamstrung by poor autoboxes - but it's easier to find or swap in a manual).

Have you owned both cars ? I have and I know !... So I take it you have,nt !.... btw, mines a manual, and the Mercedes sourced auto box is superb by all accounts which accounted for the vast majority of cars sold.I don,t know what " contemporary" road tests you,ve read, but the one,s I researched (and still have,) when I bought mine said the complete opposite and cited your exact remarks about the xjs, one even comparing it to a 70,s Trans-am/ Camaro in the "look,s" department, with designers who did,nt get on with each other.
It has been said by many, that even by todays standards the 928 look,s like a recent concept, that old signal red xjs I owned looked just that, "old" !
As I said, I KNOW !!!!
Much of what has been said is 'fair comment'.
Why would anyone spend £70k on an old jag that has done over a hundred thousand miles? I had a similar car from new.......it was a pig!
Unreliable, ate petrol and frankly bore no resemblance at all to todays cars at less than half the price.
Some might think that it will appreciate and you will find an even bigger mug at disposal time, but Brexit is making us all poorer by the week and indeed, there are much harder times ahead.
If you really want something different go for a used Tesla or an i8 ..........much cheaper and you will definitely get further than the end of your drive!
However, it's your money, so do what makes you happy.
