Agreed that the 2.0 SE-L seems like the sweet spot in the range - absolutely no competition in the price range if you are looking for a new RWD soft-top. Can't wait till mine arrives in early September!

One of the most beautiful new cars in the market at the moment. My pick would be the 1,5 litre with spartan spec.

Nice car.

Are they actually doing one? I genuinely don't know. Fiat will obviously have their version of this in a year or two so that could be interesting.

What was going to the Alfa Spider is now going to be the Fiat Spider and it will be based on the New Mazda MX-5. The boss of the FIAT group said when he came to power that no new Alfa was going to be built outside of Italy, so he threw away one of the most iconic names and images in the motor industry and gave the car to a brand that is most known in this country for poor reliability, boring cars and a reputation for unorganised customer service.

Hope that works out well for him.

I have always had a soft spot ever since owning a stunning Mk1 R-Limited edition with the silver spoked BBS alloys and red leather interior. I still remember that car with fondness.

I think the Mazda recipe of combining a true rear wheel drive sporty car (note I said sporty and not sportscar) with value for money has always been a winner.

For me, the MX-5 is not about power and having the fastest car on the road, it is about enjoying a traditional open top roadster at sensible speeds and Mazda have always seemed to get it right.

This latest incarnation of that recipe seems to have become even better. I love the F-type looks and if Dan's review is anything to go by and it has also taken a step back to the Mk1 original dynamics, or as much as it can with EU regulations adding constraints and weight, then I expect to see many of these on our roads.

The aftermarket MX5 market has always been a healthy one so I imagine there will be a fair few tweaking options available over the coming months. I may just take a trip down to my nearest MX5 dealer to give this bad boy a run.

It's the weight stats which I find so impressive. My MK1 1800 weighs 1070kg with me sitting in it. It's doesn't have Power steering, abs, AC, electric windows, any airbags, minimal crash protection etc etc....it's the same weight as the new 2.0.

Stunning job Mazda...

I'm delighted Mazda have resisted the urge to make it bigger, heavier and turbocharged. I think it looks superb.
I agree with all the people above- this does not compete with a small hot hatch- I wouldn't consider swapping an open top rwd mx5 with a fwd tarted up shopping car.

I don't suppose this car was reviewed in the Kent area perchance?

I saw one of these on the road last Tuesday - same colour, on the A2 at the bottom of Pepper Hill (Ebbsfleet) about 8AM. I didn't get a good look at the plate, but the guy driving it in these photos does look a bit familiar. I figured it must be a press car, as I didn't think they'd been released yet, but I might be wrong.

the most inteliigent and well conceived car this millenium

back to basics with a touch of convenience

it will sell well, even if the audience is limited

there is nothing else like it

Looks like a great car. I'm not completely sold on the looks but I could grow to like it.

The weight for a modern car is very impressive, particularly with all the standard equipment.

Out of interest how much does a basic Elise weigh? (including 75 kg for a driver)

A very good car at a price thats achievable for many so hats off to Mazda ,only thing I would say though is could they have kept the 1.5 engine skipped the 2.0 and tried a 2.5 v6 install they would have covered a larger market .

Mazda HQ is Tunbridge Wells so could have been around from there.

Still not convinced by the looks of the new MX-5, might be better once seen in the metal.

Admirable for what they were trying to achieve, but in 2015, it might be a tough sell against say something like a Fiesta ST - that offers more performance, more practicality and less money.

Unless you really had to have a RWD roadster, in which case, MX-5 it is.
You're comparing this to a Ford Fiesta ST? A econobox with a turbo versus a rear-wheel drive roadster?
Why not? Both sporty cars, both sub £20k. If you were looking at a Fiesta ST, but didn't need the space, why not look at the Mazda?
Both sporty cars? A sports car and a Fiesta with more power. I agree that someone looking at a Fiesta but didn't need the space would look at an MX-5.

But someone looking to buy an MX-5 doesn't consider a Fiesta, it's a different game altogether.

The looks have really grown on me. Interior looks pleasant, and very encouraging driving reviews. Well done Mazda for creating an enthusiasts car.

Just a shame that most "enthusiasts" seem to want a white diesel hatchback these days wink Hope it doesn't end up a rare sight on UK roads like the GT86/BRZ.

If you can't overtake with 160 bhp/ton, I recommend a pair of these.

You took the words right out of my mouth. When exactly did overtaking become so difficult that 160bhp/tonne was insufficient? Don't recall reading reviews of, oh I don't know, a 205 Gti (or almost any Gti prior to the year 2000) and seeing "handles well but you'll struggle to overtake anything in it".

I'm looking forward to these coming out! If anybody buys one and wants to swap keys with my original MK1 for a back to back comparison, I'm game! hehe

I guess since the days that every-day turbo diesels have twice the torque at half the rpm.
For me it's quite common to see cars being driven slowly around the corners but briskly on the straights.

But don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the MX5 and similar ethos cars.
