I think the people who most criticise 4x4s and their owners are the ones who've never owned one. When you get to a stage on your life where you are a middle aged Dad with failing eye site, a 4x4 is just the ticket.
Seems to me that if you eyesight is failing, then getting a taxi or relative to drive you would be a much safer proposition for everyone.
Don't be ridiculous - swapping your average-sized car for a whopping land barge is the obvious solution!

Nothing wrong with average-sized cars, they're perfectly adequate for average people. Barges and proper 4x4s on the other hand are a nicer place to be for above-average people. wink

My powerfully built frame hides the weight well and I have private medical care. Anyway, I'd rather dine on cake and fine wine than eat pot noodles on the Ikea sofa of my rented 1 bed new build so I can save enough cash to put petrol in my rented Golf which I cannot wash because I don't own an outside tap.

This is a wonderful yet mortifying combination of my past and present hehe

Just saw this thread is still going. I checked out about 30 pages ago, so did we ever get a definitive answer to the question? wink

Yes...if you are Rob you don't need anything more than a 320d but if you are Ares you need a mapped 640d because it is quicker than most 911`s allegedly.

One thing we do know from how many you see out on the road is that it seems you actually don't need anything more than a 320d...so CH was correct in the first place.

A woman in a diesel Insignia stuck to my tail reasonably well through some twisty roads recently, so maybe you don't even need a RWD BMW. She seemed pleased as punch with herself, too.

I have said a few times in this thread that a mondeo does exactly the same job as a 3 series anyway so I agree you don't need a RWD BMW far from it.

Not for me, it doesn't. But I am not in the 99% of drivers that wouldn't know the driven wheels from a test drive. I don't like FWD in big cars.

Let's put it this way... I take it the people on here are pretty into cars....

If you DIDN'T need anything more than a 320d, that would mean that if you fancied a spirited Sunday morning enthusiastic drive, you would open your front door and be greeted by the 320d. How many people would go for a Sunday drive in that? I can't see much enthusiasm really....

Yes you would need a 2nd car, as Rob M77 has!

Truth be told I don't like FWD in any car to be fair but as I have said before a family car is used mostly for getting from A to B or commuting so whether it has FWD or RWD doesn't really make much difference in the scheme of things.

You would never just go out for a blast for the fun of it in a family car or sports saloon anyway.

"mostly" is the key word in your first sentence, though. Why not have a decent car for that 10% of driving when it matters to have a good chassis, nice engine, etc?

I would understand why car enthusiasts buy dull cars if they were massively cheaper, but they aren't. And people don't rely on them being cheaper: they insist on saying that they really don't see that a 3er is better than a Mondeo, which makes me doubt that they know what they are on about when they wax lyrical about some sports car. If you cant appreciate and enjoy what makes a 320d better than a Mondeo, Insignia or whatever, you probably cant tell a 911 from an Elise.

Bit of a far fetched statement to make, to be fair.

Er.... Everyone is different, but for me the diesel bit is a compromise too far and there are any number of petrol fwd cars I'd rather have.

Me too and we all just like different things, when I had my 520d I hated the engine that much that there were times when I thought walking would be more enjoyable! a 4 pot diesel engine is just such a hateful thing for sure.
