Strictly speaking, no.

However, I don't need a detached house either, or 4 bedrooms, or a 40" telly, or a clever mobile phone, or a garden, or a PS4, or a holiday(s), or a leather settee, or 10 pairs of shoes or a wife even! hehe

But they're just nice things to have. So I'll stick with a 3.0 V6 petrol as a daily, and a 5.7 litre muscle car for weekends thanks wink

The 320d is a solid all rounder and hits the sweet spot between performance vs economy.

I had a really well spec, low mileage E90 refresh model for couple of years and it ticked every box- but I still prefer the car I moved to as it has much more character.

It's a lot less practical but some times you have to just enjoy life a little.....

If you are a parent..... it is arse gravy.

If you are single/ couple - possibly

But there is a very good reason cars are evolving into S Max, C Max moulds.

An F36 or F31 are there to combat that issue.

If I was trekking up and down a motorway a lot I would get an old Volvo and run it into the ground.

Do many people spend £30,000 privately on these just because they get a few mpg more than the previous gen model?

I know somebody who spent £36,000 on a 420d M-Sport after he got a big inheritance through, just to cruise around town and pose in. This can't be the norm, surely?

No, you probably don't.

But I'm a petrol head and rarely make rational or logical choices when it comes to motoring. I suspect, most people on here feel the same.

Yes if you happen to live up a hill and want to have something you can get around in when it snows.
My 123D was Ok, actually it was a very competent car, good for a diesel, (apart from when it snowed), would I buy another one, NO just didnt feel special, or really do anything for me.
Pretty much like most of the current BMW range.

The boot dimensions on the F31 are pretty much identical to an E61, which is a fantastic bit of packaging really.

Yes I need something other than a diesel BMW.

For my mental health. I cannot imagine how much I would loathe my existence if every morning started off with driving such a tedious car.
For my 2-3k a month it is a good place to be. And I have my noisy thirsty weekend car to look forward to.

My wife borrowed a 320 convertible while her volvo was being repaired. Nice looking car from the outside but the interior and engine were awful. I like my german cars but that was a serious disappointment.

I had a 320d msport for a hire car over weekend, thought it was brilliant. Interior was spot on, averaged 60 mpg and was great to drive. Couldn't fault it. Not the most desirable thing ever, but does everything well. I thought the interior was a huge leap over the e90 shape too

This is the point. Imagine how different life can be if you wake up every morning looking forward to your drive to work. It does not have to be an exotic car but just something that lifts you a little. A 320D would not lift me. A Mini would/does as would a Golf GTi. A Ferrari would not because I'd worry about what might happen to it while it was parked all day.

Just fallen out of a '62' 325 manual into a '14' 520 auto. The 5 is totally adequate ....but God I miss my six cylinder beastie...

Economy & tax differences negligible, smile factor at opposite ends of spectrum!

My funky silver cross pram/buggy thing fits fine into the boot of my e39 saloon, which is probably smaller than an F31 boot.
