RE: Porsche 997 Carrera: Catch it while you can
Discussion
Nice to see people are finally writing articles with sense rather than emotion, we've all heard the stories of the horrors of the M96/97 engines but it's massively blown out of proportion.
Still all this talking the cars down means bargains for a lot of people who ultimately could actually cash in on it too.

It just massively ruins the ownership experience for me owning a porsche if I know the engine is a piece of st.
Ask any independent without a vested interest, ask any german engine builder about the M96/M97 engines.
They will tell you with a straight face VERY BAD ENGINES, NICHT GUT. NEIN DANKE.
Rather have a lovely porsche with a lovely engine.
Got a 79 SC with all the goodies as well as my 987.2R.

With a Hartech rebuild recently. Has appeared on here before but the price was cut by £3k a few weeks ago.

fwiw, this month's PCA mag, Panorama, has an article about a couple in the US who put 578000 miles on their 2004 996. obviously there were a few hefty maintenance bills along the way, but fundamentally the water-cooled cars can do big miles despite the much discussed engine issues.
still won't convince me to trade in my 993 tho :-)

Without a doubt, the most beautiful 911 model series.
A GTS manual 2wd for me please.
Currently owned - 2005 997 C2S, 50k miles and no sign of issues - no oil consumption in 5k miles and clear borescope.

It was, I suppose, totally predictable that you would pop up with you usual view on this subject. For the interest of balance, for people reading who might take what you say at face value, and who don't know about this issue, my opion is that your views are ridiculous scarmongering, over the top, and tainted by your own personal experience of your engine scoring. I read your opinions and the thinking behind them over and over again on Pistonheads and my opinion is that I very much doubt that every 997 engine will experience bore-scoring, I think that view is ludicrous and should not be taken seriously by people who read these forums. Yes there is a risk, yes that is unaceptable, but every single engine beng affected? Absolute rubbish. All in my opinion of course.

I have every right to challenge your view, which I consider to be equally unevidenced. You seem to base your opinion on this by speaking to those who come into contact with failed engines, ie repairers, and those inspecting cars that sellers are offloading. I think this presents you with a distorted view of the issue which you then go on to repeat to others as though it is gospel truth when in fact it is only an opinion. I don't dispute that this is a serious issue, with many cars affected. However to state that every car will suffer from this is what I take issue with, and I think it is plain wrong.
We will obviously not agree on this topic, but I don't think I have any less basis in fact to form my opininion, or to disagree with yours, or any less right to try and balance what I consider to be your quite extreme view, with mine, for the sake of others who might read this.
