Friend of mine had the Cupra R version to which he had flashed a "mild" generic
Stage 1 map.
We guestimated 250-260hp in this format and on a ring trip it had acceleration to match
My 340hp M5 up to three figures.

So we're talking a dull looking (sleeper) very practical non shouty 5 door hatch pulling sub 14 secs to 100
For under 3k.

Having another pal running 220hp from a small turbo Polo Gti there is no doubt this could be a very
Useful shed indeed.

It is £400 below book trade and about £1200 under retail so to be fair to the seller the asking price is hardly unreasonable.

That'll be bought by a trader, fixed and be up for £1995 within the week.
Yes, and the equivalent TDI150 is worth about £750 more. Bit less performance, averaging 45mpg driving like an angel, 35 mpg like a demon. 1.8T will average about 35mpg/25mpg in comparison and were thousands more when new. 1.8T seems faster on paper, but in reality from any rolling speed to motorway ban speeds it's very close.
At least it's not a Gen 1 VAG TSI engine, where model highlights include the tensioner giving up instantly and blowing up your engine. YAY!

Not a bad price but I picked up a 51 plate cupra (in faded banana yellow) about three years ago for £900 and that'd been wrung out to 236bhp (printoff to prove) and moved like a scalded cat over the 6 very close ratio gears, but my god it was thirsty in that tune. My wife used it as a daily short motorway commute and barely got 25mpg!

In the end the fuel cons meant we sold it, but luckily managed to sell it 5 months later for £1,300!

She loved that car, if only for the saying I made up when she was passing an a$$hole one day "if you've not got the grunt, don't be a c..."

Indeed. "The usual engine management lights on the dash" (!) Er, nice and honest but passing it off as trivial and the norm is quite funny.
That's the problem with EMLs/CELs though, isn't it? It can be something terminal, it can be nothing. My Mum's 2001 Passat estate had its light on for much of the 8 years or so she owned it. The nice people at VW would reset the warning light at every service and it would stay off for a few days or weeks, but then come back. There was nothing actually wrong with the car and it never let her down - they said it was a software fault!

Ah, so this is what happens when German engineering is farmed out to the lazy boys of Europe for the purpose of bring transport to the fiscally challenged. Mediocrity at its most mediocre, neither a hot hatch nor worthy of the tag of "Volkswagen", this has been treated to a big case of laissez faire or whatever the Spanishch equivalent is.

Poor, I cannot understand the promotion of such an automobile. Shed is indeed an appropriate tagline.

I bet either,

A: the professional mechanics have had a look at it and diagnosed £££'s + ballache to fix,

or

B: the professional mechanics don't actually exist and the car has just been run into the ground with minimum to zero spent on servicing and maintenance. Doors dont open, it leaks, ECU light on. What else lurks beneath?

But, hey I'm guessing that's why it's half the price of a decent one.

If (and it's a big if) those issues are relatively cheap to fix then it's a very solid car for £800! I've had my '04 Leon Cupra 180 and it's been relatively trouble free. A front spring not long after I bought it on 67k, a coolant temperature sensor (which threw the EML) and a new Thermostat (both common 1.8T issues across all VAG brands) and a new window regulator just last week (£167 frown). Other than routine maintenance it's passed every MOT in three years with only tyres and is brisk enough for a quick overtake off a dawdler if required. I routinely get mid 30's over a tank and have even managed to break 400 miles to a 55l tankful of VPN+. If it's easily fixed then It's a billy bargain.

As above, stripped and a remap would make for a swift track day chariot. Bit remote steering wise though but holds on well enough. Front end bite was transformed after swapping the 'Prestivo Sport' fronts I got it with to GY Eagle F1 AS2's as well.

Err - in what way is it better than the E39 528i a couple of weeks ago?
That bmw had money pit written all over it. Had been there a while, less than a month MOT, BMWs not cheap on the suspension refresh front and I bet it would have needed it to be even vaguely driveable. At least with the Leon you could almost certainly fix the leaks and door issues yourself (its over 100 quid cheaper and 5 years newer for a start). This one id consider as a shed, the bmw no chance. But everyone is different smile
Totally agree. E39s are in that limbo at the moment. Not old enough to be classics and not young enough to be modern. The Seat is a much better prospect as a shed.

Disagree, E39s are both modern and classic. The Leon, on the other hand, is neither. I should probably mention that a close friend's son died in a Leon Cupra last year, torque-steered into a tree according to the police, which hasn't helped my perception of the type.

I could see how that would taint your view of them but I guess that could happen in any car.

I have a Leon (all be it a MK2) and can honestly say they're fantastic. Nothing about it is going to break records but does everything I want it to well.

And no, I couldn't afford a Golf!

I bought it! A first for me after years of reading Shed of the Week religiously. I just sold a Seat Leon Cupra TDi which was a great car and I was looking for an interesting replacement. I wasnt expecting to buy another version of the same car but this was nearby (well, a 90 minute drive away) and looked good so why not give it a look.

Picked it up on Sunday from Al who was selling it on behalf of his brother and I have so far done about 100 miles in it and its very lively to drive, no knocks or bangs, goes and stops in a straight line and no smoke or weird noises yet.

My friend is working on the car now to get the doors fully functioning and re-sealed too so that's the main issues sorted.

I was lucky enough to get a aircon display unit for £40 from a bloke nearby so that will be going in at the weekend and hopefully I will have enough time to service it at the same time too.

So wish me luck, I will report back in time but any questions or hints & tips on how to improve the car gratefully received.

Will be transformed with a remap apparently. I haven't done mine yet though. 210-220HP apparently.

Good luck, it is a decent looking car and they go rather well after a remap.

I am contemplating a remap - will run around in it for a while first though just to make sure all is well.

But when I do consider that, any recommendations on who/where?
