Load of namby pambies, wondering whether to put the hood down or not;)This morning, returning from the school run (well walk actually) I was passed by a WW2 Jeep, no hood, no windscreen, no sidescreens, no doors. The driver was grinning from ear to ear. Now that's what I call a convertible smile

Had the roof down on my last Mustang at every opportunity, really miss it on my current one, the next will be a vert.

Having said that I do feel a little self-conscious in my wife’s MCS roadster as it suits her better (seems more age and gender appropriate for her), but the roof goes down anyway sod what people think.

Any cabriolet that has a 0.5 inch machine-gun on the options list, is about as testosterone filled as you can get.

I enjoy my R129 roof up or down, could not care what other people think. If a drop top 5 litre V8 brings into question my sexuality, then YMCA and Gloria Gaynor it is. biggrin

It always gives me cause to smirk when I see some balding 40+ year old man wearing sunglasses and blasting around with the roof lowered on their new white Mercedes convertible or 6 series 640d.

They just look like ageing cocksockets trying to look good.
I really don't get this attitude and to be honest people could (and do) say the same about any Ferrari owner (I see you have a pic of a very nice Scud in your profile). Do you not wear sunglasses, when the Sun is shining, in your coupe by the way?

I don't remember ever considering (or caring) what anybody else would think when I bought my 430 Spider, really don't. I bought yellow and spider because my previous F-cars (355 and 360CS) were red and coupes, fancied a change and what's not to like about the open air and a very loud banshee-wail in your ear :-)

When I come to replace it, it will definitely be for another convertible!

I have to wear sunglasses in my Tamora whether the roof is up or down on a sunny day, it has no sun visors! hehe

This is the only convertible a real PH powerfully built director needs

ok, so I spend 3k on a 77bhp landie and I can feel like a real man whilst driving my >400bhp convertible Ferrari. Cheap at half the price that car if I gave a st about what others thought smile

I bought one of these about 6 years ago and told the ex-missus I'd bought a V8 mid engined four wheel drive convertible.....

She was not amused.

Funny thing was she actually really liked it once she got used to it.

I miss that old Land Rover a lot.

this is the whole point though lostkiwi!
you pay your money, you make your choice and it's a personal one.

Whether it's an S2000, MX5, SLK, Landie, Smart Roadster, Ferrari, Porsche Boxster, Lambo, McLaren etc etc - you buy it because you want one NOT because of what anyone else on the road or stood on the pavement thinks of you or your vehicle.

This whole argument of "you only bought X to sit there in your sunglasses and be gawped at" is bks - be happy with what you have - otherwise jog on...

Last year I had the choice of blowing a significant sum on just one nice car or a half decent motorway hack and a weekend car.

I went for the latter option and bought an mx5 as they seem to suit the narrow roads down here in Devon. I never thought I would own a convertible but ive never looked back after picking it up and driving home across Dartmoor with the roof down.

As for snide comments, I’ve never really come across that yet but tbh, I couldn’t give a st.

I had an S2000 for 3 years, then a TVR for 2, and a C70 CC overlapping both. I've Been 3 months without a convertible now and my god I miss it - to the extent that I'm looking at 330s and A4s for a couple of grand just to have the roof down while the sun shines. I find there are few greater driving pleasures.

Hear, hear. That's pretty much what I would have said but the cars were different.

Its more the type of person and the way they are 'trying' more than a cabriolet car per se. It's hard to articulate what I mean really but its a certain male at a certain age going through a crisis - Driving aggressively after a hard day at the office speaking middle management speak.

Maybe I'm way off side here but I'm getting on for 42 and would die of embarrassment to be seen as one of these types,

Any pics of the CS? I'll never tire of looking at them

Quite readily available but not for the faint hearted.
They have no air con, no power steering, an industrial gear change and drum brakes all round.
They also use a 3.5 Rover V8 and on a good day will do 14mpg. They're cramped, noisy and hot (you sit next to the engine and the hot air from the radiator leaks out any small gaps onto your legs). The canvas takes about 10 minutes to remove and 15 to refit if you take all the metalwork out.
Aside from that they're quite rewarding and you'll probably get stared at in one of these as you would a supercar. They're very quick off the line until you get to about 40 MPH and will top out at 80.
The spec to get is overdrive (highly desirable but can be retrofitted), on board winch and 12v electrics if you can (a lot were 24v) not that its too much of an issue.
Almost all the body panels are aluminium so rust isn't too much of an issue. Check the front axle swivel balls aren't pitted or rusty as its an axle out job to fix. Chassis seem to be good with only the rear 'bumper' overider being the main rust area.
To find one Google land rover fc101 for sale. Let me know if you want more info.

I love my convertible - I've never kept a car longer than a year, but I can see myself keeping this one!

Convertibles are just more involving, you're not encased away from the outside world - in my opinion anyway.
