So what if someone thinks yer a knob..... someone doesnt like your coat your music your haircut its their issue - not interested and def not interested in meeting their expectations.

Ive heard the jokes and well really not too bothered about them - their issues dont feature in my toughts. I just enjoy the car and if I wont drown the roof is down.

It always gives me cause to smirk when I see some balding 40+ year old man wearing sunglasses and blasting around with the roof lowered on their new white Mercedes convertible or 6 series 640d.

They just look like ageing cocksockets trying to look good.
Ah but, for me I do not give a jot what anyone thinks of me. Nor am I trying to impress. I am having fun, my fun, no one else's fun, just mine. And just to up the anti, I might wear the baseball cap back to front and say "Yo" just to wind people up.
Yeah but you dont drive a merc cab in white do you?
I feel like I need to now.......

I can't understand why everyone doesn't have a convertible.

Perfect climate in this country.

I'd definitely have a convertible if I didn't have a bike, as said the experience is much more visceral, and with the increased visibility working both ways I can easily flip anyone off that thinks I look like a knob.

Maybe the UK isn't the warmest place in the world but of course there's a clue to the solution of that in the word 'convertible'.

I suspect because of this common stereotype most people who own them are not caring about looking good, because people will assume you're a cocksocket and so it would be self-defeating.

Had a few and rarely care what anyone thinks, but I did start to feel a bit "Hmmm...." re: MX5's once all the youngsters started picking them up.I doubt I would feel this way if I were the type who left them pretty standard and met up with others in the same boat, but we were always changing suspension and wheels and seats etc.I got to thinking that as most of mine looked like what was fast becoming a youngsters car (minus the welded diffs and slammed looks), would people be suprised to see I wasn't so young? More to the point, if they thought that, were they correct and was I fast becoming one of those Grandads you sometimes see driving around in an old Rover Gti with viper stripes, a big wing and Halfords alloys? Did I care? I'm not sure...

Perhaps it's more likely I just grew out of them.I no longer feel the need to go as fast as I can everywhere to appreciate their handling etc, so I thought my Summer fun this year would be a Volvo C70 cab (it is a mapped T5, but drives like a barge). However, I now find myself at the opp end of the spectrum as I see lots of much older people in them and am now wondering if people are suprised to see someone 'so young' *cough* in such a car; especially as I enjoy using the horses now and then on the straights.Do I care? I'm not sure...

I think I cared less in my E30 cab and in the Westfield (the Westfield had no roof at all!) because they were older and felt a little more special.I convinced myself drivers would appreciate those types of cars.As mentioned in the thread, it's just that sense of freedom accompanied by all the smells and noise and drama and stuff which appeals.I used to spend entire train journeys with my head out the window, so perhaps that's where it started for me? That said, some of the more modern cars I see with the roof down involve all the windows being up and huge wind blockers all over the place. They seem to be doing all they can to make the opening as small as a regular sunroof so you don't get to feel any air rushing around you at all.Absolutely pointless in my book.If my roof is off, the windows are down - I can't do half and half! I would feel more of a tt for having a roof down and windows up than I ever would for having a cab in the first place hehe

The future...

Who knows? I'm suprised I ever felt the pang of 'Do I look like a tt?' because it's not really me; maybe I will just get older and care less and less and less and end up in the Rover with some neon..

Rightly or wrongly, people will always see a convertible driven with the roof down and think; poser, flash git, show off.

Personally I'd love a convertible for summer drives in the country, fantastic and really does add another dimension to the experience. I wouldn't however drive around the city with the roof down, nothing wrong with doing so of course but tends to do draw the sort of attention that I don't want.

I have a convertible. I don't like driving with the roof off. I gave it another try this weekend as the weather was so perfect for walking/sitting/riding and all the other stuff thats better when it's sunny. I still didn't like it.

I did have a good time at dusk on a twisty b-road, but then I always do, albeit not normally feeling relieved that finally I could read the dash.

The "why haven't got your roof off?" stuff tailed off when I got the hard tops, but I still get it. Do I ask people why they don't have a wardrobe in the back of their estate, or why they are in a Zafira on their own, or why they don't keep gloves in their glove box? No, they can use their specialised thing in whatever way they like.

My cars are for driving, not for looking at and certainly not for being looked at in. I find driving less fun when being buffeted, blinded and deafened, other people prefer it (or maybe have cars which are quieter at speed or really good hats, I dunno).

I've had this discussion several times on the MX5OC forum, and I offered to leave and never come back if the could suggest a car with the same handling, reliability and cost balance as a mk1 MX5 but with a roof, but as all the mk1 MR2s are rusty there is no alternative. Same for the Elise - Exiges are much more money.

Some people like camping, some people like hotels, and some people like to sleep in a field next to a tent they brought but didn't put up and claim if they sleep fast enough they won't get wet. Personally I like hotels, but that's only best for me and not everyone else.

Weirdly I love motorbikes, except the ones with a roof, which seem silly to me.

I have been called "a poof" for driving mine, apparently I am a closet homosexual, is true to my choice of car, it is true to say I would have been happy to be "a poof", would have got way more sex and would be all buff but tragically, I don't fancy other men and I don't even take it as an insult. I just get disappointed that those that say stuff like that still think like that, it isnt 1983, you aren't Paul Calf.

But my 3.5 RWD V6 with 300 ish bhp apparently means I am out on a permanent quest for cock but a shagged out Peugeot 307 diesel with a roof is the height of heterosexuality and absolutely nothing to do with a bit of the green eyed monster or just being one of those people who cant just say nothing, probably one of those strange people that gawp at someone with a facial disfigurement, shout from moving cars or point out to tall, fat, thin, small people that they are tall, fat, thin or small.

I don't care what other people think.

BUT.

Like a cat stting, I will never put the roof up or down if people can see me. It's all lifting panels and moving windows and electric bits and it's just a bit embarrassing. I have to hide away to do it.

You're doing it wrong. Always make as much of a fuss doing it as possible. The best time is at traffic lights and start the procedure just before the lights turn green. Outside a pub is good too. The ideal audience is two cars/two groups. One Transit or Sprinter full of Neanderthals and the other one full of totty. Or one group of meatheads and one group of girls outside a pub. Flirt with the totty whilst mincing a bit for the lads. Tremendous fun and the more worked up they get, the better. These people are so thick that putting them down is easier than squashing insects. This had a manual roof - provided max pleasure putting it down or up as it involved getting out of the car and using a little gadget. I always felt so gay driving it and as the previous poster said, always felt slightly lacking that I never acquired a ratty old diesel that would reflect my true masculinity.

I have four convertibles at the moment - can't decide which fifth to add. One a day at the moment would be nice.

You are all doing it wrong, lid off asap at the house. Unless it is cats and dogs, then roof police will kill you online. Then head out to some proper roads and stop fannying around outside pubs.

And if anyone has seen my hat, can I have it back please.

Can anyone recommend any headgear for my missus to stop her hair going all over? We have tried the gimp mask but it made her head sweat
I'd suggest fitting a roof to the car.
hehe

Don't be silly, that goes in the boot!

Had one for 2 years before the little'un arrived and it was glorious. Going for a blast down the lanes with the roof down on a warm summers evening is a life affirming experience. I WILL have one again at some point so sod what anyone else thinks...except for men driving MX5's, that's just plain wrong nonogetmecoatsmile
