Around £2,500 to spend on a car....
Discussion
My current car doesn't look to be too hopeful for its coming MOT, so as a result, I'm likely to need a replacement.
It's for a 45 mile round trip commute, 30 miles of which is motorway, the rest inner city.
I'm after something with a decent amount of boot space as I spend a fair amount of time mountain biking so want a car with enough room to get the bike in. I was thinking focus sized or larger.
I was attracted to various diesels, but I'm a bit unsure of maintainance issues and costs down the line since I'm going to be buying reasonably high mileage cars. I'd ideally like something fairly economical but not totally gutless on the motorway.
I have a few focus zetecs fairly locally to me with around 55k on them for £1,600 which seem okay as spending less would be beneficial if possible, any likely drawbacks to them?
Cheers

TBH if you like the car I hope it gets through the MOT!
But if not, I don't know if this would suit, but I bought it for around £2K last November and I love it!
RWD and straight 6 petrol - lovely! Possibly not the most economical option for a 45 mile commute but mine is showing 32.3 mpg average on the OBC so not terrible. Had a 123d before, similar performance with 48 mpg but the difference is the way they deliver the performance - I'll never go back to diesel, I'm happy to pay for the higher fuel usage!
By the way E46 Coupes all have folding rear seats so can also accommodate bikes easily but for some reason it was an option on saloons, and for some reason the Compacts are so much cheaper than the other body styles.

Always liked the older shaped Civics.
Seem to be a few around which is a good sign.

Should be able to average 40mpg on your commute

Celica? I picked mine up for £2500, with 55k on the clock, granted no service history, 1 key, and not too great condition cosmetically. Mechanically, though, runs a dream. And the boot is huge! You might struggle to get one with that kind of mileage within your budget, but some fellow Celica owners on here have bought theirs with 100k+ on the clock and they drive like they've got half the mileage, apparently
