Swap for an R8 ??

Undoubtedly the 997 Turbo PDK that I drove was hugely fast - quite possibly one of the fastest cars I've ever driven and even on the limit it was utterly composed. It also felt very normal inside - feels like a regular German car (no bad thing in my opinion) The audi on the other hand is WAY down on performance although still plenty quick enough. Despite this, for me the Audi felt the more special of the two - more engaging and certainly more characterful. I loved the feel of it and the interior was nicer than the porsche. Personally I'd opt for the Audi. If you can stretch to the V10 then Maybe Its worth checking out, servicing wise, well I doubt there is much in it between a V10 and V8 R8 and last time I checked Porsches weren't exactly cheap to service either so it shouldn't really put you off
A V10 possibly, but definitely not the V8, was real disappointed in its lack lustre performance, made laods of noise but nothing really happened throughout the rev range ? The car I drove had 79 miles on it so guess it may loosen up a bit, but still ? The performance wasnt great. WIll keep ya posted re the V10Hughesie said:

90 litres = 20 gallons give or takeHoly f**k, thats 9-10mpg ? Driving like miss daisy ?? Big Hairy B******s to that, would defo keep my stuttgart slugger if thats the case ??

Can't speak from experience (although I quite fancy an R8 myself), but a friend of mine had a 997 turbo which he loved. Got itchy feet and went for the R8 V10.
My perception (and thats all it is) was that he seemed to really try to like the R8, but he actually liked the 997.
Still, horses for courses - so worth a try if you fancy a change. Lots of Porsches about, you can always swap back.
The R8 has more drama to look at, but probably needs a sports exhaust to make it sound as good as it looks. I found the driving experience more exciting in the Turbo though - but I'd be tempted by the R8 as they look so cool!

They do look the nuts, but after the V8, am seriously contemplating keeping my 911, the idea of switching back is a good one, but I genuinely believe that in a couple of years, I may not be able to afford to switch back, manual turbo's are on the move price wise, and while they will never command GT car money, they are going up, will try a V10, and go from there. Mine was previously used as an everyday car in to london, its currently on 30k miles, original clutch, 40% worn, i've got all the bills and in 5 years it had about 5k spent on it, including services.
I've been using mine a lot in a short space of time and put another 4/5k on it with a couple of european trips.
Dealer i bought from stuck an RAC platinum warranty on it and i'll save the rest for any bills, the Audi warranty is around £2k per annum, unless you can get it included from a dealer.

All new suspension bushes/coffin arms
New Water Pump
New front rads
New Pads (PCCB so expensive) all round
New clutch master slave cylinder
all belt pulleys replaced
2 services at £1k a pop
Depending on your mileage, i'm looking at cheaper motoring in the R8
Buy well, it will look after you

Through bad operation you can burn through an R8 clutch pretty quickly but you can sat that about most cars. The majority of clutch issues with the R8 are the R-Tronic cars and this tends to be where the computer partially engages a gear while creeping or trying to hold the car on a hill for a long time. Regular abuse will shorten the clutch life. Manual issues are just due to a poor driver. It is advised to get a clutch wear reading before you buy so you know where you are starting.
Apparently Audi will contribute to clutch replacements if the mileage is unusually low and it's an approved used car.
Personally I wouldn't use the R8 as a daily driver if you're just sitting in heavy traffic, a nice country run each day it will be fine.
If you want an R-Tronic I'm selling mine at the end of September (ironically to move to a 911!) with 13 months Audi Warranty remaining, all the usual V10 extra bits as well as extended leather, i-pod connectivity and carbon ceramic brakes....

Possibly going for 997 GT3, I want something more focused as it's not a daily driver. Would love a 997 GT3 RS but prices are too high for my budget!Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
