What's going on with headlights now?

Bring back separate front indicators that you can actually see as well
Hear, hear! I'm sick of being stuck at roundabouts because I literally cannot see some indicators until they are 3ft away from me. Dangerous. Plus, I like the unpretentious look. I much prefer the looks of cars from the 80s and 90s than those of any modern bilge.

Oh so many times this. I find the indicators on VWs to be particularly hard to see with the clear lens all in the same strcuture. Not that the fkers use them half the time anyway.

Headlights on the front, amber indicators front and side... Swoon...An example of doing it right:
It might be partly to do with American (and maybe some other countries) regulations about side reflectors at the front and back of the car. Rather than having extra bits in the bumper sides like the Jag XJ above, build the headlight to have the front lights and side reflectors in one go. The US Fiesta has side reflectors like this, the European/UK one has a big blank chrome bit.
Remember if you smashed a headlight or broke off a mirror you could just pop down the motor spares shop and get a generic replacement for a few quid.
Mirrors are hitting £300 each on even a lowly shopping car and lord knows what it would cost to replace those all in one bulbous bubbles that they call headlamps these days.

What about the bonnet having to be a certain hight than before . If you had lights just on the front it would leave a larger gap so they are moved up and shapped
IIRC, it's that a certain amount of space has to exist between the mechanical components and the bonnet. I was miffed to discover out that to replace the side light on my 2003 Accord you have to remove the wheel arch liner, so this daftness has been going on for a while. I've been putting the job off as I just know that when I try to do it I'll break a load of the fixing brackets and then have to wait months to get more, at vast expense, from Japan.

Old mirrors didn't demist or have adjustment from inside the car, let alone electrical adjustment from inside the car. They also didn't fold, pretty often.Mirrors are hitting £300 each on even a lowly shopping car and lord knows what it would cost to replace those all in one bulbous bubbles that they call headlamps these days.
Not really an apples for apples comparison. I prefer the expensive ones that do nice things like auto dim/auto demist/fold/position.

A lot of this was driven by the US requirement to have lights visible from certain angles at the side. I would presume the EU regulations have changed accordingly also.
It's for safety.
Sorry it's not, you can achieve the EU regulations with lamps mounted solely on the front face of the car. (Of course if you share a lamp with the US version then the side reflectors may be mounted in the lamp like the Fiesta). It's for safety.
It's styling and styling only. They love 'wrap around'.
We engineery types could package a front mounted lamp (a la that weird Citroen thing) if that's what styling wanted us to make.
