It's why some cars have 'pop-up' bonnets that have springs or pyro/explosive actuators to raise it, and thus created more space to the hard bits (suspension turrets etc) in the event of a crash.
Those are mightily expensive to replace if they go off, though. The GTR costs around £10k to reset one and replace the parts.

Old mirrors didn't demist or have adjustment from inside the car, let alone electrical adjustment from inside the car. They also didn't fold, pretty often.

Not really an apples for apples comparison. I prefer the expensive ones that do nice things like auto dim/auto demist/fold/position.
Granted, but as a part of the car that is more likely to suffer in a minor accident or abuse, they shouldn't charge so much. No way are they worth hundreds of pounds.

I would take an educated guess that an OEM wouldn't get much change from £100 for a top spec one kitted out with puddle lamps, heaters, blind spot warning lights, LED indicators and cameras.

They're expensive bits of kit these days for the OEM's to fit to cars.

The worst offender of the current crop, made all the worse by the rest of the 'design'.

Worst? Not even the worst in Nissan's own range.

Exhibit A:
Weren't those Leaf ones like that for aerodynamic reasons, basically to deflect air away from the mirrors and deal with wind noise that's only a problem as the thing is so quiet?

So maybe there's an aerodynamic saving?

Have to agree with other sentiments, four big eff off round lamps on the front and amber indicators with a good degree of separation.

Bring back separate front indicators that you can actually see as well
Hear, hear! I'm sick of being stuck at roundabouts because I literally cannot see some indicators until they are 3ft away from me. Dangerous.
Bring back the amber indicator lense. I don't want lights to be 'car jewellery', I want to be able to see the indicator and see whether it is on or off.

Plus, I like the unpretentious look. I much prefer the looks of cars from the 80s and 90s than those of any modern bilge.
Oh so many times this. I find the indicators on VWs to be particularly hard to see with the clear lens all in the same strcuture. Not that the fkers use them half the time anyway.
Agree wholeheartedly. yes Seems very much a case of form prioritised at the (significant) detriment of function.
