TVR taking deposits for its new car

Prospective customers can secure a car from July 7

Wouldn't you know, there's been an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the confirmation of a new TVR. More so than initially expected in fact, meaning that TVR is bringing forward the date of inviting deposits. "We've been totally blown away by the reaction" says TVR's Operations Director John Chasey.

The last TVR to be sold new...
The last TVR to be sold new...
So if you're interested in the next TVR, due in 2017, the company will begin to accept £5,000 deposits from July 7. Detailed specifications are "to be established at a later stage." There's a further incentive for TVR fans though, with a discount for TVR Car Club members.

During July all TVR CC members who have been members for at least six months will be given the opportunity to place a £2,500 deposit. This year marks the club's 50th anniversary and the gesture is designed as a thank you for the "established individuals" who have "demonstrated continued enthusiasm and loyalty to the brand." Should be a few of them on here! TVR will also make a financial donation to the club for every deposit from a TVR CC member.

TVR Chairman Les Edgar says it's important "to reward those people who have been such enthusiastic ambassadors" for TVR. As well as the reduced deposit members are promised some of the early production units.

The next challenge faced - or at least one of them - is establishing a UK network of TVR Heritage and TVR Performance partners. TVR says most of the early cars will be delivered direct from the factory. More news when we have it!

I expect this is nothing to do with wanting lots of investment money.

Call me an old cynic, but I'd like to see something a little more tangible than an Autocar image before placing a deposit with a new start-up business..

There is a bit of a difference in placing a deposit on a car, and looking to fund the venture.

It does kind of smack of the latter, but I do wish them well though.

At this stage though, I'm oot.

£5k deposit without knowing if the final car will be £40k, £60k, £80k or £200k, how big it will be, and what engine it will have.

You'd have to be a very committed fan to do that - fair play if anyone reading this is one of them.

Fixed that for you. wink

Only kidding. I wish them well, and the deposit holders will hopefully be rewarded with an exceptional car.

I love TVR to bits, but I wouldn't put a deposit down without seeing what the deposit was for!

I am assuming that those who do hand over the £5k deposit will at least be shown a picture, along with being told a little more of what they're buying into beforehand?

As much as I love TVR, I do not have blind faith, which is what is being asked for here, well not to the tune of £5k. For the £5k are you a contributer to the start up capital and hence a share holder or something, what happens when they change their mind in 12 months time will they do a Phoenix. Too many variables At this stage for my liking.

Like any sane man I'd like to see something more tangible for my money before I would commit. I'm also expecting a mail shot, having registered an interest on their web site, have I missed that or am I expecting too much.

Also a bit of clarity on what the £2.5k discount to current TVRCC members is, I am a lapsed member after many years subscription and if I thought I ended up paying more than a current member then out of principle I would not proceed. Seems a bit devisive to me, putting current club members ahead of long established owners who do not 'get' the club. I don't think I am alone in that?

Absolutely agree.

If it was an established product being made in limited number like a Porsche GT3 / GT4, then blind faith is acceptable.

But this new TVR is neither established or limited. It first needs to prove itself, especially if the higher price point of closer to £100k than £50k becomes a reality.

To be fair, even the reserved build slot might have some investment potential when the model is unveiled - £5k deposit down now might translate into, say, £7k if a reticent buyer suddenly decides they want one ASAP.

And the engine has been confirmed as a Cosworth-fettled V8.

Obviously a roll of the dice if you want to join in, see it as that and you'll be fine. Could be a fun ride over the next few years.
