Have you ever just thought 'sod it' and bought a car?
Discussion
Owned 1.3 Corolla. Needed sensible car for commuting up and down motorways.
Two days later bought a Cadillac.
Actually, it was a diesel BLS, so just a Saab 9-3 in faux-Yank bodywork, but my non-PH friends and family thought I'd gone nutty.
Very nearly did the same with an S1 Elise, rather regret not doing so now.

I turned 50 about 9 months ago and decided i desperately needed to buy one of my childhood dream cars. Found one that fit the bill on the interweb, less than 300 miles on the clock, 4hrs drive away, drove up there and paid a deposit. Took another 3 weeks to get it trailered home. Broke down 10 mins into first outing.
All sorted out now tho, brilliant fun to drive, neighbours very tolerant of the noise.

I've just done something similar but I'm still waiting for deliver, it's testing my patience but it will be worth it!
Roll on September for my RHD version of this!
My last petrol car was an Austin Maestro. Fast forward 25 years, having done a couple of track days in my Scirocco TDI (140bhp), I was at Elvington with my son on a track day. I stood their watching him go round the circuit and found myself pondering why the hell I hadn't brought the Scirocco R. Heh presto 7 days later the deal was done, and on my third day of ownership I was on a track day.
So how can I put it, after 25 years of being a diesel convert, I thought 'sod it', and am now well and truly converted to the benefits of petrol car ownership.

Couple of months ago was at the point of scanning the market for a newer model Octavia VRS estate to replace my 06 plate one. Was considering that Seat Leon X-Perience 4x4 thing as well. Had to be an estate for carting around family/bikes etc.

Sold my sensible 330d Touring due to commuting by train, just bought a house, no kids, lovely wife, love cars, thought sod it don't want to get to 80 (when I can next afford a nice car!) having not had something incredible - so nearly bought a V10 M6 (not special enough) and then thought seriously sod it and have loved Maserati V8's so took the plunge in February and bought a Granturismo. Beautiful, amazing car - best in the world and with a noise that really does turn heads. Incredible to drive at 20 mph or 70, and very useable. Wife loves it, parents hate it (have a diesel Skoda) but you just have to do these things. Unfortunately just got handed redundancy notice but hoping I don't have to sell her as this was a keeper!
Just do it, I have zero regrets (even when fuelling) and love every second

Yup, twice.
Went to a farm auction with a friend (bit of a last minute thing), he was there to buy a tank or something equally ridiculous. I broke off and found a handful of Series Land Rovers & Defenders hidden in a corner, one of which appeared to be really solid. I'd never owned a Series LR before, so I hastily got a bidding card and won it.
As we walked off to the next section, I called my parents to give them the good news, my father asked me what engine it had. I had to run back and check, I didn't even bother to check which engine it had!
Another one; I had been looking at Range Rover Classics on and off for some time, having wanted one since I was 13/14.
I'd been left alone one Saturday evening and I got browsing eBay, as you do. But I had an impending house purchase, so anything I looked at was purely for ideas rather than purchases.
And there it was, THE Range Rover Classic. I don't know why, but it just screamed BUY ME. There wasn't a panel on the body that wasn't bashed, the headliner was missing, the tyres were trash, and paint was falling off the wheels... Resistance was futile, and on the Monday afternoon it was on my drive, and the mortgage deposit fund had taken a hit. It's just about to go off for full restoration, too.
I'm not very rational when it comes to rusty old Land Rovers

Which was traded for a Lotus Elan S4 dhc which, whilst looking lovely was a total POS.
I do regret selling the Caterham I built, the E30M3 I traded for the Chimaera and a few other that I should have kept for the young son though.
As for Grandson, I'm going to advise my son not to bother, they are too much trouble....!
I fear it is not a story he will want to share with the grand kids in nostalgic fashion...
Nothing exotic, but all in my student days, in the 80’s, and all funded by myself. All cars cost around 800 GBP
Cavalier SR, New Years Eve, back in my local, mate hard up for cash. Purchased his high miler, 3 year old SR for a snip. Did a Euro road trip in this. Nicked by scroat’s, total loss (lost 3 cars at uni, in the same fashion)
Rover SD1 3500, went to buy a Fiesta 1.1, blighters not at home. Looked in Auto Trader, found a phone box (remember them), came home with the aforementioned. Even did another Euro road trip. Had to replace the brake pads twice my self, my was fuel expensive on Portugal.
Montego 2.0, EFI, VP, went to Auction to buy a sensible little car, got the EFI, 3 years old, with 110,000 on the clock for GBP 800. Not loved by many, but made nice progress, and inside was a nice place to be
Finished Uni and purchased a 900cc Fiat Uno.
