I wish I could be like you lot. I tend to go through an extensive agonising period before finally making a decision. The downside of taking so long however, is the car inevitably leaves you disappointed - my current Civic Type R is a case in point. Nearly bought one three times previous, finally went through with it, realised it's not very good after six months.

Bugger.

Yeah, woke up hung over to buggery and decided I was going to be sensible, sell the M3 and the other cars and buy a Toyota Aygo.

Went into the dealership and asked if I could buy the Aygo Black in the showroom, lad said 'No, it's our demo' which sounded like a challenge to me. So I made and offer and told him to speak to his boss.
Got a call before getting home saying 'It's yours.'
Paid over the phone and collected on the Monday morning.

Later in the week stopped and wondered what I had done.

Sold it to a Toyota dealer a few weeks later, only lost a grand thank fk!

I've got (a well deserved) reputation for this.

My wife used to work Saturdays and I'd be left at home alone. I'm not normally someone who visits car showrooms but popped along to a BMW dealer who had an event on in my z4mc. Left the following Monday with a 3yr old M6 convertible. Had to tell a big Porkie pie about the price too. Fast forward 18 month someone scratched it when I left it outside a pub in Marlborough over night. Sold it the next day and used my wife's car for a week or two. Was dropping a mate off at Andover train station and saw a Passat cc that I liked so I popped in and PX'd my wife's car plus some money down and off I went home to a look of disbelief.
Also bought my Westfield cosworth unseen off eBay on a whim.

My wife just rolls her eyes now.

Winter 2005, no work and was bored. Wandered around a Porsche showroom and the guys were nice to me, let me sit in a few models so thought fek it! and ordered a new 987 Boxster.

Had to wait 5 months for it to be built and delivered. Waited around 3 months until I showed the wife the order form.

This winter I got excited about the possibility of a RHD Mustang coming to England and thoughts went to 3 or 4 years down the line when I could possibly afford a secondhand one.

I spoke to a dealer who told me that the phones had not stopped ringing since the prices were announced the day before. I rang back 5 minutes later and gave them a deposit.

I'm now one of the 1200 waiting for their new cars smile

In similar fashion I once went out to visit a friend for a quick catch up.

I left my mate's warehouse with:
- the bottom end I wanted for a project car, plus the head and everything else still attached
- 2 replacement wings for another project car
- a front end of a VW Corrado
- a full turbo kit for a VW VR6 engine

A few days later after the engine mount died on my daily driver I thought sod it phoned a mate at a scrap yard and swapped the car (worth circa £200) for some alloys that don't even fit any of the other cars I own.

So I went out to buy a new car that the wheels would fit and ended up coming home with another Corrado VR6 - well i needed something to strap the turbo to didn't I!

I still have the wheels with no car to fit them to but at least they don't take up as much space nor irritate me as much as the Citroen Xsara they replaced!!!!

Our VW California wasn't quite like that but the time from deciding on one (used, £35k budget tops) to picking one up (new, £45k..oops) was under a week.

It gave us some great holidays but sadly made a 1970s Lancia look reliable. Crappy VAG diesel was the main issue plus a new rear diff, plus plus plus... Sold it in January. Luckily they hang onto their value rather spectacularly.

.....sorry to be an old stick in the mud ...but..NO. I have never thought "sod it" and bought ANYTHING without giving it a great deal of thought. And certainly not a car ! I do wish that I had been made differently (you know ,"devil may care") but hey ho , we're all made different.

It took me ages to decide to write this reply !! Talk about SAD !!

However , I think if my absolutely PRISTINE MK 1 Lotus Cortina , that I sold far too cheaply many years ago ,suddenly became available then I might think ......"SOD IT"........

Obviously having the wherewithal to buy something special is the first requirement, but for none of us, is this life just a practice run. it is what we get, no more no less. There were thousands/millions of years before us, and there will be the same behind us when we are gone. We only get the little tiny bit in the middle.
Remember also we may live to be a hundred, but will we still be OK to drive something special in our later years ? (when probably we might be completely happy if we just get a piece of toast in the morning, and a cup a soup at night)
Depending on ones other financial commitments, it would seem to be a case of, just do it.
We will probably regret more those things we did not do, but could have, when we are on our last knockings, no point in being the richest stiff in the churchyard.

Too many cars bought on a whim - just look at my profile paperbag

These days, it's all stupid, big engined old barges that take my fancy, so at least they're relatively cheap.

Came very close to adding a Jag XJS to the fleet this weekend, but the seller couldn't be bothered to get back to me, so good sense had the opportunity to sneak in and smack me round the back of the head with 2 x 4 a few times wobble

Great thread!

A few years ago I was bored on Boxing Day with the house full of relatives.
So I picked up an iPad and bought an old Land Rover. Obviously.

I still have it

Pure impulse purchase - saw it on the dealer's website, called to make sure it was in stock, drove to the dealer, test-drove it, had a bit of argy-bargy over the price - drove it home. All in an afternoon.

No regrets whatsoever - it has surpassed all of my expectations, so far.
Love that! What particular model is it?

Similar thoughts have been going round inside my head recently, resulting in test driving a Cayman and a 911 last week! A spot of man maths and shuffling various priorities about a bit will shortly ensue... driving

On a hot july day randomly on Gumtree a mx5 popped up. 10 mins later I was around his house, 20 mins later it was at my house.

Turned out not to be my best purchase.

My dad on the other hand had a habbit of going to work and coming home with with a different car which displeased my mother greatly, especially as she is short and one of the cars he come back with she couldn't floor the clutch hehe it was pretty common in the army to swap cars whilst at work.

Flew into London to attend a property auction in July 2012. Shortly after landing realised I was a day late. Auction had been and gone the day before. silly

10 hours to kill before return flight. Wandered off to Knightsbridge, and walked past HR Owen in Old Brompton Rd. Decided I'd go in and have a close up gape at some of their nice metal. yum

And an hour later was back on the street having specced up a 458 Italia which they subsequently delivered to my door later that year. smile

It doesn't live up to the standards set by some on here, but I very uncharacteristically did this with my MX5. I'd wanted one for ages. I was bored of driving mundane hatches. I asked my partner if she'd mind spending a Sunday nosing so I could rule it out, what with a 44mile commute each day, and we both fell in love. We had a ten minute chat. She told me to do it before she wanted children. I did it while I could. Do I regret it? No. I wonder if it was the right thing to do some nights, being a chronic worrier, then I look out of the window or drive it, and all is right. I had the money in place so not a completely out there decision, but...

I went out to buy a Nutribullet the other day. I had researched it and talked to people that owned them. I desperately needed one.

I saw it on the shelf at Sainsburys for £90 but next to it was a Breville that appeared to do the same thing for £30. I went home with that. Rock n Roll.

As to the poster that said that we might live to be 100 but certainly would no longer be able to drive, you are so right.

I feel a bit miffed that I will be 53 by the time my Mustang arrives and already regret leaving it so late, especially as most of the US owner reviews on YouTube are done by 20 something year olds.

I fear it is not a story he will want to share with the grand kids in nostalgic fashion...
