Not a rant, just an observation.

I used to have an mx5 import (where this subject seems most prevalent) and as such still have friends from forums and see all nature of social media posts featuring mx5s.

What I've noticed is an influx of frankly crappy bolt on aluminium spoilers - like those of 12-15 years ago - making a comeback.

I'm talking the sort of tat you'd get from the likes of Ripspeed and regularly see fixed to the back of a Ford Orion together with obligatory sponsor stickers.

Back then the majority would have pointed and laughed and eventually shrugged - it is after all your own prerogative what you do to your car.

I wish I could post some examples, but I'm on my mobile phone so you'll either have to use your imagination or do some research. Common crappy mods currently doing the rounds include-

DIY wrapping - wrinkles included
DIY plasti-dip paint jobs and...
...Matt black paint with zero preparation
Genuinely expensive 'Big Gay Wings' not proportional with the size of the car and 9 times out of 10 not in-keeping with the level of performance either!
Painted stock wheels with zero prep which inevitably chip/flake
Italic script window stickers often right in the drivers line of sight stating how 'scene' or 'fresh' they are
Boso-style exhausts while not adopting any of the rest of this inspiration
People 'adding camber' for aesthetics

Don't get me wrong - I love modified cars and historically have experimented with my own cars with varying degrees of success, but the forums are so politically correct now you can't point out how cack something looks without being shot down for being a "hater"

No, I don't "hate" either you nor what you've created, I'm merely notifying you that what you've done looks sh*te!

It's not the act of doing it I'm against - it's the response you get when you offer your opinion.
Person posts new modification asking for "opinions"
Negative comments made
"hater"

I despair. I just hope all the good MX5s aren't all ruined by the time I can justify owning another!

BGW are usually a bit tongue in cheek, either to make them look like drift cars or race cars, not many I know that run them seriously.

Camber is a look too, partially to do with getting wheels to fit under the arch.

Stickers have become quite a big thing too, to rep a certain brand or group etc.

The rest are just usual tatty mods.

I'd not seen anything like that for many years until yesterday, when a truly horrendous "MR2" drove down the street. Half red, half orange with a white stripe down the middle to split the two colours, huge exhaust, LED rear lights, pop-up headlights replaced with quad fixed types, chrome wheels and most other tat that could be found slapped on or in it. It was like looking back fifteen years to the days proceeding the original F&F movie that sparked this trend.

All of these st modifications are for a "look", it's just a particularly silly look in most cases.

Stupid levels of camber to allow excessively big wheels can fit under the arches isn't any kind of justification, just more proof of brainless chimps trying to achieve a "look" with no understanding of what they are doing.
