I'll be a pedant, but Statham drove a 740 BMW in Transporter.

I don't think it was a 740.

However he stole a Monaco-registered S600 from the house with the fight scene.
In the spirit of utter pedantry it was actually a 753i that Statham drove in the first film.

750iL then? V-12 power.
735i, I think. I remember that it was manual.
The Car / BMW 1998 (E38) 735i or 750iL ?

Then I will agree it was a 750! I was just going based on badging (I haven't seen it for ages, but I think I remember it having 735i badges)

Having spent well over twice the purchase price of my 600 SEL in the two and a half years I've owned it, I can attest to the fact that these cars have expensive tastes.

(see stoic other half, having just loaded her on to a flatbed)

That being said, I was a serial car flipper before Diana came along. Now I'm so deeply, madly, truly in love, I'm taking her to the US with me when I move.

(see her at the end of a 1-day blast from London to St. Anton in Austria)

Be aware: if you allow it, you'll be hooked for life (or as long as you can afford it)

Good choice of name for one of these cars laugh

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned already.

I must confess to being a little confused. Has it got a great/huge S500 spec, or not? Lol, trader ads make me laugh.

I think it was Garel Rhys' paper comparing Lexus (Toyota) and Mercedes W140 manufacturing that put MB into a right tizz. According to the FT, MB's car division consistently had in excess of $1bn of annual warranty claims. Rhys' paper showed that Toyota could build a perfect Lexus LS400 in the same time as it took MB to sort out the faults as these came off the production line.

As a customer I'd still MUCH rather have the Mercedes although that does show incredible inefficiency at Daimler in comparison.

I am sure this is a wonderful vehicle and is likely to be a fascinating and rewarding thing to own.

However, I am not sure I would want to be seen in it. To me, they have associations of pimps, protection rackets and organised crime.

Am I alone in thinking this?

Sorry, I would have an LS400 every day of the week.

Is that paper available online anywhere? Sounds like an interesting read.

It was a combination of the rise of competitors such as Lexus, together with the huge development costs and lukewarm reception for the W140 which led to the complete change in Mercedes culture of the 90s. The change that produced rust-buckets such as the W210 E-class and the ML, but also enabled the company to survive!

I often read "Shed of the Week" and want the follow up story, the "I bought the SOW.." thread.

This one more than any previous one I can remember..

There will be some things wrong, obviously, but who buys 700 quid of tyres if they think the problems are terminal? A lot of times issues can be generic and not need $$$ Mercedes parts..

I live too far away to buy it (and round here you can't get a car like that, running, for $1500...) I want to know what happens when someone puts down the cash and attempts to drive it home..

And I think it looks great, even with non-standard wheels.. In fact, they might even make it.. (Though yes, what's the point if it destroys the ride quality..!)

I've got an S500, had it about six months now. Lavished lots of wonga on it doing maintenance stuff (it's a keeper) and it's now close to perfect. I drive it a lot couple of trips up to Leeds and back from the south coast and it has averaged 28 mpg, yes seriously, and I don't baby it. I've given it three oil changes in 3,000 miles, diff, gearbox, the lot, new tyres, shocks etc. The beauty of these is that there is practically none left on the road, they have all been parted out. Which means you can get lots and lots of spares for practically nothing. I had to fit two new cats recently and a barely used set cost me a couple of hundred quid as opposed to the £2,000 Mercedes wanted (!). The car has working Sat Nav too from 1998 with a 2007 disc in it so it doesn't even get me lost (very often haha).

Here's a few shots of my barge

I have a bit of a soft spot for these cars, mainly due to the sheer size of the bloody things - talk about a tank! hehe

It was in the book "The Machine that Changed the World" - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Machine-That-Changed-World... - it didn't actually name Mercedes, it said it was a well known German producer of luxury cars. The follow up book, Lean Thinking, named Mercedes as by then they were putting cars together properly.
