Cars you want but will never buy
Discussion
Mazda RX7 - Love the idea of one but tough to find a nice one. Plus the maintenance.
Alfa 147 GTA - Again the maintenance, already have a hatch and a saloon so would add a sports car if I added another.
Honda Civic ek9 - Hard to find a nice one, increasing in value, don’t need another hatch.
Audi S8 - Running costs scare me and I do not need a car bigger than an A4.

Maserati Quattroporte
I've always liked big V8 saloons and it's the ultimate for me but the running costs would be horrific so I'll probably never even sit in one
I'd probably say a Quattroporte too.I've always liked big V8 saloons and it's the ultimate for me but the running costs would be horrific so I'll probably never even sit in one
I recently met a guy who bought one, he gave me a rundown of his recent bills. Eye watering doesn't even begin to describe them. Although funnily enough, when he gets in it in the morning he doesn't regret it one bit.
Oh, I got to sit in it :P.
Maybe if they depreciate a bit more and fall in to the hands of DIYers I may reconsider.
Any Renaultsport Clio.
Start by at looking at 172s/182s because of just how cheap they are now. Then realise how old they are and probably decaying and rotting badly. Most likely end up needing to rebuild the whole car in stages.
Then look at 197s/200s as the prices are also looking better over time. Then see how bad they are on fuel for the performance, the awful flatspot they have, hearing about failing gearboxes and the dreaded expensive cambelt changes needed. I think i'd grow tired of ragging the hell out of it everywhere just to move and still being beaten by basic diesel rep mobiles.
People are probably gonna say that i'm missing the point with these cars. But even people on Cliosport.net end up getting rid for the same reasons. It's a genuine shame as i still really like them but i just can't bring myself to bit the bullet

I've got the money and a big enough garage but my health isn't up to it and I don't khow long I'll be able to drive one, so I can't justify it.
Oh well, plenty of other things to be grateful for
I guarantee you'll be able to drive one long enough to enjoy the experience of owning a car you've lusted after. No point dealing with the agony of regret when everything else is in your favour: you can afford it, you've got the room for it, you may as well go for it and add something else to the list of things to be grateful for.Oh well, plenty of other things to be grateful for
P38 RR.
Unbelievable luxury/ comfort for the money. Legendary bork.
996 911.
Lying a bit here- a decent early 3.4 manual (less bore score to be scared of than the facelift 3.6) would tempt me at sub £9K.
RX8.
Looks great, does alot of things well. Rotary goodness, ultra cheap. CBA with watching the oil to the point I develop OCD. Fuel consumption also sketchy for ~230hp.
Most early 00s Mercs, particularly those with massive engines.
Those CL-somethings from about 2000> seem so tempting for about £3.5K. Bet they're almost universally sh*t.
Mk3 MX5.
Seems like a good value, reliable, usable roadster. Devoid of genuine MX5 appeal. Bought from new by misguided people.

RX-8
I still think they look great after all these years but the rotary puts me off. And I'm rubbish with hammers and spanners, so I couldn't fit a boxer engine without paying someone else to do so.
Yep, that goes for me as well.I still think they look great after all these years but the rotary puts me off. And I'm rubbish with hammers and spanners, so I couldn't fit a boxer engine without paying someone else to do so.
I remember reading all the road tests saying how good they are to drive, and every time I see them in the classifieds I think that they look like amazing value for money, but then I remember why.
Alfa GTV6 and Renault Alpine A610, both of which I have been on the cusp of buying previously before bottling it. Think both would provide more trouble than enjoyment.
Opel Manta A-Series or Opel GT - lusted after both of these for years in my 20's, now think they would be a disappointment to drive.
Jensen Interceptor - narrowly missed out on one of these a couple of years ago, think it was the last half decent AND reasonably priced one in the country. Now getting just too expensive for what they offer even though they are gorgeous.
