Auto cut-off doesn't work on older cars so I imagine quite a lot of drivers brim it.
What? Of course it does. It works on anything as long as the nozzle is "in" the tank.
No it doesn't, not in my '63 Riley. Never has, not once in seven years.
It's not car dependant! It cuts off when the fuel level reaches the nozzle regardless of what vehicle it's on.
I can only write from experience of filling my Riley since I bought it in 2007 - sorry if you don't accept it.

on VW group cars there is the 'trick' to vent the tank and squeeze another 6/7 litres in after the pump clicks off.

With practice this probably takes another 30secs and no fuel should be spilling out. That extra 30 secs gets me about another 60-70 miles per tank so definitely worth doing.
Go on...

Im curious...

My old Volvo could take nearly another 10 litres between the first click and it being properly full, but it would take ages because diesel foams up so bloody much.
Thought that had been stopped with additives? We used to have that issue with the vans but no more.

On the plus side I typically do pay at pump and don't spend 3 weeks in the shop checking the date on every bar of chocolate before deciding not to bother and just buying a newspaper.
fk that, you need a degree to pay at the pump in Tesco and get a receipt frown
"Would you like a receipt", two options: yes or no, click a button to suit.

A degree in what, exactly?

Electronics I think. That's what I have and I find it a simple enough system to be able to choose receipt or not receipt whilst I am filling up.

I think I've got it pretty streamline now to be honest. Put the card in the machine, turn around and take the filler cap out, whilst I've done this the machine has read the card and asked for the pin, then I got my wallet ready to put the card back in whilst the machine accepts the pin and approves the payment, wallet away and pump into the car, start filling. Go through the menus to have receipt or not, finishing filling and return the nozzle to the pump. Filler cap back on and jump in the car.

I can do all this before some people have worked out if they want pay at pump or kiosk.

I think it's the word kiosk that throws them.

I had some guy in front of me brimming, clicking, shaking and repeating for about 5 minutes after his tank was full. Every time it clicked he looked back at me, then carried on. I had to politely ask what his game was; it was fairly plain that he was on the wind-up.

Fill till click, adjust nozzle slightly and repeat for one or two more clicks. Shake off nozzle, tried to avoid small drip landing on car, swear and wipe drip off paintwork.
This.

I think I am right in saying the automatic cut off is based on vapour? As a tank starts to become full there will be a lot of vapour trying to escape. Adjust 2-3 times, 1-2 clicks each time.

Tank brimmed.

Fuel gauges often under read very slightly anyway.

When driving locally I usually fill £10 or £20, never more. On long trips I let it keep clicking until I think I should stop, right that's enough, aha.

With the Jag when it clicks off the first time the tank is brimmed. Pull the trigger again and petrol just runs out of the filler.

TVR well who knows, first click off is just an indication that there is some fuel in the tank. The clever bit is working out how many more liters to get in before its really full and it starts filling up the carbon canister. I usually add another 5 or so liters after the first click.
