In commonsense world the SORN would extend to the new keeper (me) but it doesn't. All I have right now is the new keepers slip and to make a SORN online or by phone I need either the full logbook (as I understand) or a V11 reminder (which I don't have). There is a function on the SORN website to use the new keepers slip but that won't work until the old owner has returned the form and my details have been processed. However, doing it in this way will inevitably leave a couple of days where the vehicle is untaxed and unSORN'd.

Is there something I'm missing? I really don't want to walk into a penalty over something so stupid... frown

SORN has always expired on change of keeper, right from it being introduced nearly 20 years ago.

Using the V5C/2 online shouldn't be an issue - even if the main V5C is still in the post. If it is, and you CBA to wait a few days (it really won't be an issue), then V890.

SORN by post now.

If you are too early for the process (ie DVLA hasn't sorted out the reg doc in your name yet) you get a nice letter saying you can't Sorn it as you aren't the registered keeper.....

Then you wait till you have the reg doc and you can SORN on Line confident that you have all the documentation issued by DVLA to successfully tell them to FOAD if they try the penalty route (After all you tried to comply with the law on the day you got the vehicle)

It's how I do it now ^ DVLA can't put two and two together to recognise that if they have a SORN by post in one department it's likely that they have a change of keeper in another.

Sent off the form and waiting on DVLA. Amusingly I have a donor car arriving this week which will also need to be SORN'd...

Thanks again for all the pointers. smile
