At the very least it confirmed the first 6 words of the first post post were true!

Well it's not really, if you think about it.

I have no problem with people that hate Astons or Range Rovers or Caterhams, or Porsches or M3s or M5s or RS4s or RS6s or Lotus, or whatever...

...as long as they have owned them and know what they are talking about.

A bit like I have no problem with people who hate music they have actually listened to.

If you have, fine.

It's the way to go folks, do it before you talk about it!

Indeed. I felt that I couldn't really dislike slavery until I'd owned a few first. wink

It has always been the case that whichever firm is offering the best deals over a period will attract the most monkey end of the driving spectrum.

A recent example has been the C class AMG of a few years back. Merc wanted to carve I to the BMW and Audi dominance in this niche and did so with amazing sales deals. Net result is that they tend to be driven by some monumental jubs.

And you see it at all levels. You can tell who has the best Motability deal by just looking at what the latest model is that gets dumped in the weirdest of parking exploits.

Younger than 50

Driving a diesel
Driving an AMG with lots of glossy/shiny bits
Also on a lease.

Yep I must change my car now because of what others think!

If you compare driving German cars to slavery, then you have a point! I don't have to throw myself off a cliff to know it'll hurt, but I do have to drive a car to know if it drives well. Subtle difference!

I can hate the look of the new Astra, or the new Audi A4 (which I do), but unlike many in here, I feel it necessary to have driven a car to say IMHO how well it drives.

I don't give a toss about image. I've driven Porsches when they were deeply unpopular, BMs when I'd never get let in when turning right, and Audi R8s when I was apparently a cock.

I just drive what I consider to be good cars.

Slavery is objectively bad. Cars are subjective, but only when you've experienced them.

Yeah, but if someone hates a car (or make, whatever), they're not going to buy one, are they? Why spend £30k plus on something you hate*? I'm not about to buy a football season ticket just to somehow legitimise my dislike for it, I'm going to dislike it because I dislike it.

All cars are so good that even we enthusiasts mostly choose on looks, image, noise, spec etc. I do (the V12V looks, sounds and feels glorious, I just have to put up with the way it goes and drives!).

With the exception of the AMG cars, I'm not a huge fan of Mercedes. My dad does has a lovely E350 coupe but I don't actually want one. I feel the same about Audis tbh - with the exception of the performance models, nothing really floats my boat and I think they are a bit overpriced. That said, I haven't owned or driven an Audi so maybe I'll be proved wrong one day.

I'm guessing a cyclists who's here only to defend actions of his mamil compadre's. Would anyone want to write '000s of posts on cycling forum and not being into cycling?

I was on the edge of buying a GLA Amg Line but decided against it. Very nice interiors though
It shares the same buttons/door handles/switchgear as the trucks, which is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your point of view.

It seems round our way 90% of people with an A180 amg trim think it's a full on A45.

I don't have much interest in cars but I've noticed lately that Mercedes seem to have changed their model line up from boring old grandad to aggressive young wannabe stylee; al la noughties era Audi strategy. Lots of flashy bits, chrome stuff, aggressive 'aero' glued on trinkets, silly wheels & badges, more exhausts than you can shake a stick at, stupid LEDs etc

They (round here at least) are also now driven by complete wkers who want to look like they're amazingly more successful than yow. So just wondering really, have Mercedes taken on where Audi have left off? Is Audi becoming more grown up?

biggrin

But - the main point I'm making is they are all made to look aggressive now, and it has lead to owners thinking they are indeed the big I Am. They think they are successful. They think they are important. They need the aggressive nature of the car (and cheap lease deal) to project a tough, aggressive, brash image.

Whereas I'm an actual. who drives a outwardly unassuming boring car. So when I cut you off, or block your pathetic attempts to intimidate me by fking you up, it makes me better. Comprende?

Yup. MB seem to be the current weapon of choice with Chavs in the Essex Badlands atm. No doubt dozens will soon be spotted in the local Asda carpark complete with badly stone rashed paint, kerbed alloys, at least one dangerously worn tyre and sporting an illegal numberplate.

Oh dear, you sound a little bitter. Worry not, keep saying it's everyone else's fault, not yours, sure you'll be fine.

Yes, but where have you been lately? Nobody buys stuff like that these days they just lease them!

Frankly have to say I am obviously uninformed but I have owned a W123 280E which was a great car (even if mine wasn't a great example!), a W201 190e which was fantastic then a W202 280 Sport which was probably the most disappointing car I have owned out of 35 or 36 (getting too old to remember)

Based on my experiences, what friends and work colleagues told me about their experiences, the disinterest I was shown the only time I went into a dealership thinking of buying new
(not leasing, but they never spoke to me so never found out!) and the chrome bling exhausts and fairy lights on all those current C/E 200/220 CDi AMG suoercars they make nothing now that I will ever want.

Audi never have appealed - no RWD!

Last 10 years I have only owned BMWs, but even they don't make anything now that I want. Got given a white 116d M Sport courtesy car a year or two ago - glad I didn't see anybody I knew while driving that! All down-sized, turbo'd, CO2 optimised, flappy-paddled, sound synthesised, blinged-up chav lease wagons.

The only new car currently available I really want now is a Ford (gone full circle as I had loads of Fords years ago) as in Mustang V8 manual - can't afford new just now but used some years from now would be fine.

Should be able to detach A3/A4, A, B & C Class diseasals from the rear bumper fairly easily with one of those!

I don't like what Merc have done with the A/CLA/GLA platform, it just doesn't appeal to me. I read a review of the CLA where someone described it as being what an old person thinks a young person wants a Merc to look like, and I think this is very accurate.

I say this as a former owner of the old shape B Class which I liked and it was brilliant for carting bike plus dog, but with a tractor diesel. Looks not too good though...
