Golf 7 - No USB port - really?

I've heard FM quality is equivalent to using a 32kbps bitrate.
Sounds like a bit of a simplistic comparison between the bandwidth of a typical FM transmission and the sample rate of an MP3. IIRC, and there's a good chance I don't, FM stereo had a bandwidth of about 40 or 50kHz which would be equivalent of a sample rate of 80 to 100 kbps. With modern MP3s running variable bit-rates depending on the complexity of the waveform at a given point in a piece of music, it's an impossible comparison. FM is also obviously much more noise prone than mp3 since is it an analogue signal and as such has no error correction.
The point at which mp3 bit rate and FM signal noise cross over in terms of overall "quality" will vary depending on the ear of the listener. As you reduce the bit-rate, MP3s tend to lose their extreme high and low signal responses first (I've no idea why?) whereas FM just gets crackly. I find the former much harder on the ear than the latter but many people either aren't so bothered by the problems of low bit-rate MP3s or don't have the hearing range to detect them at all. I find anything below a (peak) bitrate of about 200b/s to be horrible to listen to, but I don't mind FM (except for all the bloody adverts on most of the stations).

Given that iPhones make up such a tiny proportion of the portable media type market, that would be really, really moronic if it's true.
Would be great if true. A tie up between the purveyors of the Emperor's new clothes seems like perfect brand synergy.Im sure your Android product is amazing, especially so - considering the fact that you can get them free, when you upgrade.

A very high percentage of the UK public have IPOD's that they connect to their cars just for in car music, as they hold a helluva lot more material than a smartphone (of any manufacturer) ever could.

biggest Ipod is what? 64GB
there are phones out there that will take micro SDXC cards, and 256GB ones are easily available (with some 512GB ones starting to show up).
does beg the question exactly how much muzac do you want?

I think 32gb is probably more than enough for most people to listen to every MP4 song once over 12k miles driving in a year. At 25mph average over that time that would be 400hours of music, which would be 6000 4minute singles.
Also, you could instead just use the 256gb sd card instead, of a phone or player.
Ok,
I give in.
It's all a conspiracy of the manufacturers and Apple, to upset anyone who has bought an android - as such people must be held back from evolving into super-humans who will then be able to take over the world and enslave the rest of humanity with their Androids.
Edited.
I just realised, we have three Samsung tablets at home.

So, nobody in our family fancied the free Android phone when we last upgraded.
Why would we be forced to? Simply because other people seem to have 'issues' over that hardware and software choice?
It all seems a bit Primark vs Hilfiger to me.
A tshirt is a tshirt - get over it.
You should try some of the newer android phones. I got sick of endless Apple bugs (phone signal issues, battery problems and faulty screens) and made the jump. Why would we be forced to? Simply because other people seem to have 'issues' over that hardware and software choice?

I still have an iPhone as a work phone but it gets little to no use now I have a droid. The droid just does everything better and most car manufacturers seem to be wising up to this since most allow me to plug my phone in.

So in the much vaunted, do no wrong Golf R, I couldn't listen to music on my 32GB USB stick? That really is very silly.
BT music is better than it was but it's still poor.
You still can't beat CD but it's nit exactly convenient.
I've got a Lexar 32Gb SDHC cards in my Golf and it works fine, but no, you can't use USB.BT music is better than it was but it's still poor.

See what you've done now Stewie? The last thing the world needs is another Apple vs Android geek-wk-fest.
Honestly, my question was answered a couple of pages back FWIW I managed most of the drive to work streaming off bluetooth, got a dropout because the particular app for the radio station I wanted is a bit crap and doesn't seem to buffer/reconnect but I can deal with that.
The short answer is the car (GT trim and AFAIK no additional options but it was pre-reg) does have the MDI but there is no USB up front or in the storage area between the driver and passenger seat - there is SD in the glove box.
First world problems indeed

iPods, yes it's a high proportion, although I'd bet less than 5% of new car buyers ever connect an iPod to their car. The statement made above was that the only thing that would talk to a Golf over the data port was an iPhone. I've never connected a phone of any kind to my car's stereo and probably never will. My music comes from a £5 USB stick and as such the comment wasn't of Android vs iPhone; it was of phone vs mp3 player and/or USB stick. I'm not anti-Apple - I have a lot of respect for a lot of Apple's products - I own a Macbook and it's one of the most impressive pieces of computing hardware I've ever used.
