Recently, I looked up the vehicle details on the DVLA's website for some cars I know have been scrapped. However, one is showing up on the website as not taxed, and one isn't showing up at all. Why is This? Are there different processes for scrapping a vehicle? Someone help me out here.

I scrapped my first car around 4 years ago and that's showing up with tax and MOT. I don't think scrap companies always do as you ask with them....

I feel sorry for whoever is driving round in my Nissan Almera which was knackered 4 years ago so god only knows how crap it is now

Nope, unbelievably it's the same car. I wonder who actually spent money plugging it in to clear the CEL, who put new brakes on it, and a new front bumper.... It also should of needed a shock as well as I only replaced one so I'm sure the opposite wasnt far behind.

The timing chains on these also stretch and cause the sensors to go mad, £1000 to replace... It had one at 50k miles and it was 130k when I scrapped it.

Unless it wasn't as knackered as I thought....

I just think it's weird how some cars are shown as scrapped by not appearing on the DVlA database, and some are just shown as untaxed and without an MOT. Wouldn't the scrap dealer/garage get done for not declaring the car off road?

For a DIY'er that sounds like <£150 worth or parts. If just a run about and the bumper is still on the car just damaged then leave as is.

I forgot to mention the misfire, it was running rough as a dog, suspected cam chain sensor due to chain stretching. But that could of been something more simple I guess and if someone had the time to spend on it then I guess it might of been okay... I wouldn't of said it was worth saving but you never know! Cheapest shock I could find was 75 quid alone so I doubt it would of been sub 150 anyway... Only paid 800 for it!

Does sound strange OP

If a certificate of destruction has been issued it will disappear from the check able database, if it hasn't and is just signed off as "with trade" it'll sit as no tax/no mot.

Cars can be with trade pretty much indefinitely.

I understood Skyedriver to mean the running car might be a ringer. Stolen car in good condition with the identity of yours.

Thanks for the help everyone. So what does 'with trade' mean?

Also, another question. Why do some cars appear on askmid but not the DVLA's website? For example, Y114 RBU. Ford Focus. I know it hasn't been scrapped because it's on askmid as insured, so why isn't it showing up on the DVLA's site?

The yellow section of the V5 has been returned to the DVLA because the car has been sold to the motor trade - primarily for reselling but dismantlers etc can also use it.

A certificate of destruction is what triggers removal from the database - separate process done when it's finally crushed (or sold to a scrap dealer that issues one instantly knowing it won't return to the road)

As for the insurance thing - some insurers are ste at updating the MID when they're told to
