You can get your new car much cheaper in ireland with sterling so go 1 pound = 1.40 euro and you get the vrt of the cars for export, example new R8 v8 in ireland 190000 euro for uk buyers £90000 stg,vrt of 65500 euro

And then add VAT @ 20% when you import it.

Plus maybe new car tax?

I don't think it's as straightforward as buying the car here (ROI) and driving it back to the UK?

I'm wondering if the VRT rebate program only works for cars that were imported secondhand privately from the UK, rather than new car sales in ROI? http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/export-repayment-...

Quick sample comparison, looks interesting...

A6 Saloon
S line 2.0 TDI ultra 6 speed1
Basic price47,600.00 EUR (34000 GBP)

A6 Saloon
S line 2.0 TDI ultra 6 speed
ROTR Price:
34,820.00 GBP

Dealers used to quote an export price, whereby the car wouldn't need to be registered in Ireland and so no VRT liable. RoI cars may be lower in specification than UK ones though, even if the trim-level is the same name

As an aside, the VRT rebate scheme is for any car registered in RoI where VRT was paid

It would be if that were the case. But let's not let that simple fact get in the way....

I dont think you pay VRT in the first place if its being exported from Ireland, however you do have to pay VAT at very least, plus maybe new car taxes.

Used to be a roaring trade here in the North of people importing them from the south.

You've picked an odd car as an example, given the R8 is just about to be replaced and the v8 superceded?

Have you any other more mainstream examples? BMW 520 M Sport, M4, Boxster?
