I still don't get it. Why can't you just go to the dealer in Germany or wherever, hand over your hard-earned Euros and drive away? Shouldn't need an SVA as it's EC type approved, just need to pay the registration costs in the UK and get an MOT. No VAT due because it's been used abroad for more than 6 months.carl_w said:

Hi Carl - so to make this as clear as I possibly can - there is one other variable to this as well:- Cost differential Ferrari main dealer vs private (in Germany at the time we bought the car) approx £9k.
- Costs to find and bring the car back to the UK - including inspection / conversion work needed / registration costs in UK / flights and travel costs - approx £6k.
If you want to buy a LHD car here at a dealer in the UK then factor in the full £15k difference as a minimum to the cost of a private car on the continent or factor a £6k differential dealer to dealer. You could always have the car trailered back to the UK - probably for less cash outlay but where's the fun in that?!
We believe the £9k difference was worth it for the 2 year Ferrari Powertrain warranty, but others may not. As such you can do it for less - but you incur more risk IMO.

I'm not thinking of taking the plunge but I have imported cars before. I can see the £9k difference in price, but additional £6k in costs? Did you travel by private jet? What conversion work is needed? Surely the lights should just have a switch to swap the beam over? No they don't just have a switch to swap the beam over - I wish they did! You also need to convert the KMH to MPH. and that's just the conversion costs...schaeffs said:

Hmmmmmm... Unfortunately you we're misinformed. The Scud headlights do indeed have a switch that you can throw to flatten the beam, exactly how mine have been adjusted to pass the mot. Anyone stating otherwise is telling porkies am afraid. The £1400 cost to me was as follows.- Headlight adjust
- Speedo conversion
- Import through SVA
- First years road tax £260
To clarify the SVA question... You're right the car doesn't need to come in via SVA, however having found self dentistry a more pleasurable pursuit than dealing with DVLA I gave up and went this easy / managed route. A huge bonus being that going via SVA means a much more palatable yearly road tax (no one likes paying taxes do they).
The extra cash spent to import in this article sounds like a finders fee type agreement to reduce the risk and pain. Perfectly understandable as it's a fair chunk of cash you're handing over. However, do your home work (and leg work), fly out and go see the car at least once and if possible buy from a Ferrari main dealer you can drive away a car that comes with 2 year factory cover and the cost of import is circa £1400 - My Car Imports (speak to Jack).

On the extra to make up the approx £6k - as above it was the costs to inspect the car, the travel (both ways) and the registration in the UK.
On SVA - if the DVLA don't like your Mutual recognition submission for any reason then you do indeed have to go through this further process. That also adds to the costs incurred.
Essentially what I was trying to say is that these costs do add up quite quickly when you are importing a car across from the continent. It's not as simple as just paying your money and driving the car back across via the Eurotunnel
