Essentially what I was trying to say is that these costs do add up quite quickly when you are importing a car across from the continent. It's not as simple as just paying your money and driving the car back across via the Eurotunnel
So I think we've approached the same challenge from different angles yet arriving at the same outcome. Not wanting be rude but I don't feel your statement above is correct and is slightly misleading to others contemplating the same journey.

You can throw money at it (inspections, numerous flights for two or more, getting the car back, import process) or you can buy an approved car within the EU main dealer network already inspected and covered for 2 years) - then drive it back. Cost to me, 3 X cheap as chips flights (didn't need the return on the last visit smile).

First thing I did was get the car to HR Owen London to have them give it their FOC once over and register the 2 year warranty with them and within the UK network.

I could have even saved the £1400 import managed service fee if I had of stuck with BS DVLA nightmare but I was losing the will to live and glad I did in the end.

If you're smart willing to do a bit of leg work and buy from the right dealer there are some amazing deals to be had...

Thanks Slick but I don't agree with you either. Part of our extra costs above what you incurred were about us ensuring that the car wasn't in an accident, for us this was important - you took a different line but not one I would have taken. On top of that we had more expensive flights and had to drive a lot further!

So that was our experience that I was writing about - not yours. It is certainly not incorrect or misleading (which feels a little harsh) just different from your experience.

What motivated this was in doing our research on buying we heard some stories about cars being sold, particularly in the French network, which led us to taking the extra precautions. For us that seemed eminently sensible.

So I think this has now been done to death although this is Pistonheads right? Spend £3k and do it Slick's way or spend £6k and do it ours - you pay your money and take your choice!

Haha - awesome! The costs were forgotten as soon as the key was twisted in the ignition and that amazing engine cranked into life for the first time in our ownership! smile

If you ever fancy a drive over towards Maldon in Essex (great country roads in between various villages and farms) I'd love to have a look at the beauty cool

No harm done, as you say this is PH and banter is to be expected...

wink Either way you've ended up with what looks to be a cracking car, I also like 16M wheels.

Enjoy sir! biggrin

Thanks - yes it was definitely worth it - driving it back on the German autobahn's was a life affirming experience in itself!
