That's an unusual part to go and especially to fail repeatedly - tell us more? They provided the replacement front prop for the Defender and after chewing one per year of cheap ones its been on for over 4 years with no issues at all.

My rear dampers for my Alfa (Mito Cloverleaf) come in at around £600 each...so not as bad a Clio Trophy ones, but still!
I wonder if there are aftermarket normal (non electric controlled) dampers which would be better performing, or more reliable? Obviously you would lose the in cabin adjustability, but not a huge deal.the silver grille or 'mouth' on a MK5 r32 from the dealer is... £527 inc vat. This is just the silver central large grille ( no R32 badge either!_) and doesn't include the bumper itself...absolutely mental.
VW cracked mine, but because it was cracked already wouldn't take liability which was fair enough - so they said I could have it at cost price which was £360, retail being £527. thought he was pulling my pants down so I called another dealer ( Swansea) and the rates were identical.
I declined and got offered money off my next service which will do me better.

Replacement engine for Lotus Carlton in 1993
£9999.99
it was a bargain
At the time the Vauxhall pricing on the parts system could only cope with 6 digits - actual price was several thousand quid more
It went POA after a few went apparently
Only one that really made me say sheesh was my BMW 740i Gearshift Knob in wood cracked on a really hot day and became really nasty to use so I asked BMW for replacement cost
The faux wood version was three times the price of the black leather version - I bought the leather one

Recently took my R8 to Audi for a 'bigish' service and was quoted £1366. I asked if i could supply my own parts to which they said no problem. I supplied my own oil and spark plugs and this brought the bill down to £942.
So thats £424 for 10 litres of oil and 8 spark plugs for which i got for about £170.

See the silver trim on top of the boot (just the boot)...
It's about £700.

I was quoted £160 once to replace the headlight washer on my old Porsche 911. I was a little confused, since the washer worked but would dribble a bit of screenwash as opposed to the drowning effect the other washer produced, so I went to a specialist.
They charged me £5 to remove and replace a small rubber pipe between the motor and the nozzle that had cracked in the car's 6 years on the road.

M10 bolts that hold the exhaust manifold to the turbo on a 1.8T Audi A6 - they were something stupid like £7.80 each for a standard 10.8 tensile bolt of a length you can buy off the shelf pretty much anywhere for about 50p
Even the parts guy at the dealer recommended just going to a DIY/tool/fastener shop
