The perfect car deal and hand over for me would be:

Screw the salesman for as big a discount as possible.

Collect the car from outside the showroom, salesman hand me the keys, say enjoy the car,now fcensoredk off.

I've only ever had one brand new car and by that I mean leased!

Walked in to the dealership to collect it and sat down at the salesman's desk to sign the paperwork etc, when I spot a car shaped object under a red sheet, roped off with my name on a sign next to it!

Me and the OH started laughing, but managed to control it before the salesman came back.

They did the big reveal, two of them lifting the sheet off the car to reveal a......Citroen C1.

It was like they knew how much I didn't want the car and were just taking the piss!

I bought my last two BMWs with the clear instruction that I didn't wanted the dealer to valet or 'prepare' them in any way whatsoever prior to handover - because I'd be taking them to detailers who would only have to work that bit harder to remove any waxes/sealants applied and of course the inevitable swirl marks.

An unforeseen positive consequence was that my M5 was parked outside, well away from the glitzy showroom 'handover bay', dirty and still with transportation wrapping in places. Handover was swift with the salesman remarking that they were expecting a big cheese from BMW UK shortly and that he was under strict instruction from the DP to ensure that my car was gone before he arrived!

A collegue does exactly the same thing with his cars and actuslly stopped using the Audi dealership he had been using for many a year because they polished and cleaned his new R8 despite him requesting they didn't, a request he made every time he bought a car from them - he said they made a right mess of it.

I'm not expert though so I have no idea on such matters and what constitutes "ruined it" (his words).

He was fuggin' livid though.

A lot of cars leave the factory with piss poor paint finishes, and are then subjected to shipping and road transportation... finally, irrespective of what state it arrives in, letting a dealership's valet team loose on a nice new car is sacrilegious as, in the process of making it all nice and shiny, they *will* scratch/mark it. Far better to take the same hypothetical £500 they seek to deprive you of for 'paint protection' and either do the work yourself (if you know what you're doing and what to buy) or hand it to a reputable detailer.

Like yourself I'm no expert either - my bro on the other hand is pretty handy - here's a link to one we did in-house http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.p...

I have to commend my local Land Rover dealer who didn't put me through any big reveal BS when I bought one of their cars recently.

PH is my return to sanity. Having lived in the USA for two years now I've let people make me believe im weird because i find all the fake loud flashy things embarassing and want no part of it, with the usual "its a bit of fun" comments to justify how cheesy people are.

After reading this thread today I am slightly restored.

I would also just prefer the keys and being told where the car is.

Thankyou chaps.

So we colected the car on Friday.

It was very cringworthy but the misses liked it. No pressure selling of paint protection or insurances. Gap was given with the car when we bought it, so no worries there.

after a few bits of paper work were signed we headed to the handover bay and were shown the car. While The o/h was given the chat about how to open the door i looked around the car and to be honest i was very surprised at how well it was prepared. the last new car i bought was a corsa in 2011 and it was in horrible condition, polish residue everywhere. but the Audi was perfect.
After a few limp handshakes she drove the car out the bay.

I must admit i was very happy with Edinburgh Audi and it was alot better than the horror stories i have herd.
GAP wasn't given, you paid for it, just not in an obvious or pressure situation.

I see that as just as cringeworthy as the big reveals, I suppose alot of dealers are used to it now. And that comes from one of the longest standing DW members.
Nothing meant personally, but when you see threads of the most poverty spec chevy cars and then go 'the dealer was under strict instructions not to touch it' I just cringe.

But hey, if we were all the same itd be a boring world.

Me, I just let the dealer cover my legacy in lots of shiny silicones and washed it off (eventually) when I got home.

Why is it cringeworthy to ask them not to bother preparing it? In both cases my cars were being paint corrected by third parties so having any prepatory work done immediately beforehand would only serve to increase the amount of effort and potentially cost. Ring any pro detailer and discuss a new car detail and they will advise the same. As mentioned above, a [positive] consequence is that both cars were handed over very swiftly after being received.

Besides that I don't generally trust dealers to do a particularly good job when it comes to car cleaning - I usually ask them not to perform a complimentary valet when servicing, for example. Is that cringeworthy too? Would you cringe at the thought of me saying "no" to the Romanian guys in the supermarket car park, or the schoolkids stood on my doorstep with a bucket and sponge offering to wash it for £5?

That I fully understand, especially if you're paying an hourly rate. And its good to see dealer have been very accommodating in this requests (most of the time).

If it makes you feel better I used to ask for my old car not to be washed and the only time they listened was after the Manufacturers warranty had run out. Although we did have a big disagreement when the replaced the rear window brake lights and left finger prints in the bit of glass covered by the lights. The wanted to charge me as all the roof lining had to came out to replace them.
