Got a call from my step daughter to put the spare on her car as she had a flat tyre. When I removed the wheel I noticed a big split where it looks like 2 tyres had been joined at the side! She bought 4 Firestone tyres from a place in Worthing 3 years ago and insists she's not had a new tyre since. Can anyone help shed some light or has anyone seen this before as I can't believe I've not noticed it before! I've heard of remoulds but sticking rubber on!?

Is the tyre rubbing on something in the wheelarch?

The lighter rubber is an old tyre that's been cut and stuck onto a newer tyre or something like that.

This.... it looks very much like its worn away the sidewall in the area of the darker rubber.
Broken coil spring perhaps?

It's where the car has been driven on the tyre with either very low pressure, or completely flat..... Just spotted that it's the inside of the tyre, so as above, could have been rubbing on a broken coil spring or something else in the wheel arch

No it's 2 tyres stuck together I'll try and get a better pic.

No way... I can seem where the sidewall has been worn away and the rubber is thin on the shoulder and starting to show the cords.

There's 2 different colour of rubber and you see where they have cut through the writing!

No, what you're seeing is where the side wall has rubbed away, removing the side print and revealing rubber that isn't several years old.

This.

Imagine of you had the tyre on a lathe and skimmed away a few mm, that's what you are seeing. Something has been rubbing on the tyre, if it was 2 stuck together then it would be the same on the outside.

And it's cut the writing on the side in a neat crisp line! There are 2 thicknesses of rubber and it the same on both sides. Have you seen this before then?

LOL - that must of made quite a racket and quite a smell at some point!

You'd no way manage to stick two tyres together at that point and them hold pressure etc.

Can we quote this whole thread before its deleted!

It's rubbing on something, go and have a look in the wheel arch I bet there will be telltale signs (like rubber dust everywhere).

Re moulds are stamped as such and it's only the threaded area that has new rubber added/remoulded to it.

So what you are saying is it's rubbed on something and worn away a sharp edge on both sides revealing fresh new rubber underneath!

It's obviously not clear in the pictures I will take the wheel to a tyre place and get them to look it at it.
