I went in a 991 Turbo S last week, merely brisk at six and a bit seconds.

Point being, 100 mph times now are being recorded that were decent times for fast cars in the eighties to hit sixty, it used to be all about 0-60 but quick ish being 8 seconds, the performance tapered off massively above that point with a Golf GTI taking 26 seconds or so, a full 18 seconds to add 40 mph.

Under ten seconds to 100 has been the preserve of the supercar or seriously tuned stuff until fairly recently, but a lot of the new hot hatches arent that far off and with a bit of fiddling can duck under 10, RS3's, Golf R's, 135i's, Focus RS and the new Mustang cant be more than a few tenths off, massive performance is so accessible these days, even your average punters diesel will be faster than the original sports models, i.e. Golf Diesel versus a MK1 GTI, thats progress, but whether its as much fun, not sure.

I think performance isnt quite the risk it used to be, imagine letting most normal drivers loose in a 135i with no esp, abs or traction control ? it would be carnage the minute it rained, possibly before.

Acceleration is certainly a better yardstick than max speed nowadays. Something that couldn't cruise at 70 would even feel slow to Devil2575 laugh

I also think something like 30-70 or perhaps 50-100 is the best measure.

I've decided that the old 0-60 sprint is obsolete, that a 0-100 is the new standard. And I'm assigning a time of <6 secs as the pass level. The Ultima does it in 5.3 secs. Anything road going faster!
I'm sorry but what makes you think anyone cares? It's not gonna catch on. It's like me suddenly making a thread saying "I've just decided torque now trumps BHP figures..." etc. Neither are really properly accurate measures on how fast a car is. Those numbers are just to sell the cars not define them.

PH strikes again.

Didn't we have almost an identical thread about 2 weeks ago? rolleyes
+1

The OP has declared the McLaren F1 (0-100mph in 6.3s - Autocar) is no longer a fast...

I'd say "quick" for a road car should be defined as "faster than average" so that would probably be 0-100 in about 30 seconds. hehe
I would have said 25 seconds to 100 is a quick car.
In 1960 perhaps....!!
I think you need to look up the performance of cars in the 1960s wink

I think hot hatches are quick so i'm not of the view that a car has to be able to do a sub 5 second sprint to 60 to be classed as quick.

Yes there are quicker cars and I would refer to them very quick.

For example, A Fiesta ST is a quick car, a 911 is a quicker car and a 911 Turbo is a very quick car.

But hey, this is PH so I'm sure there'll be a willy waver along sooon to tell me that compared to his daily drive a 911 Turbo is slow...biggrin

In a similar vein to the definition of a "fast car", here is a photograph of a "large house".

I don't think there is anything you can buy that would be meaningfully or noticeably quicker than a 991 911 Turbo S on the road, even the hypercars like the P1, on a track, on the Bonneville salt flats yes, but 99 percent of roads are the wrong scale for cars that fast, it is mind boggling and largely superfluous how fast they are once much under 10 seconds to 100.

I kind of like to be able to apply full throttle for a while and feel like I am giving the car a work out, but in something like a 911 turbo its just so much faster than I am.

My Stock man swore he didn't let the cattle graze on my lawn while I was away. Another one for 'First world problems' I suppose.

I used to go by quarter mile. Anything under 14 seconds was quickish. I'd imagine an Aygo can do that nowadays.

2 yardsticks I enjoy reading about cars are 0-100-0 and 20-70.

The braking challenges horrible German barges that are excessively heavy.

This.

0-100 in <6 seconds in a road car isn't quick, it's bordering on insanity and IMHO completely irrelevant on the public highway.
It seems that you are in the wrong area.
Go out of the door, turn left, go to the end of the corridor then either left for Mumsnet or right for BRAKE. smile
It would appear that you are a plonker smile
Oh I don't think so. To me it looked like a way of disagreeing with you without being offensive.

With our speed limits as they are, a good 30 to 70 time in, say, 4th gear would be sufficient to please me.

Some of this very fast acceleration inevitably means that one could get into a fair amount of trouble very quickly if it were to be misused. I think that's where the danger lies with such performance being available on public roads.
