Really strugglng to understand the lack of love from some quarters here, is this PH or Mumsnet?

The comments about it doesn't feel fast can be a very subjective thing. IMHE a quick car doesn't feel fast when the delivery is very linear, sit in my Cerbera at medium throttle and you wouldn't beleive the speed unless you looked at the speedo or scenery, trust me it is fast like that and really fast if you bury the throttle into the carpet.
A peaky car can feel very fast when actually its not that fast, its jut the delivery when its either coming on cam or boost. Likewise a unstable car can feel fast even when its not, it isn't fast its just unsafe!
No doubting a really fast car on full chat will always feel fast, pin you back in your seat kind of fast, but the Golf R isn't a really fast car, its a very capable fast car by any measure that happens to be a practical hatchback as well. Can't undertand the negativity here?
It's all part of the 'meh' society we seem to live in these days. If VW made a Golf that broke the sound barrier in a straight line, out cornered a P1, did 567mpg and cost £15.99 a month to lease, it would still be universally derided on here, just for being a Golf.

I can just imagine advertisements saying "Golf R: as quick as a 10 year old Subaru!" Doesn't sound so remarkable that way does it?
Just imagine how awkward that advert must be for Subaru.

"The all new we .... erm, not an impreza but kind of an impreza...... just as quick as the one we sold 10 years ago, just as naff inside, whole lot more expensive"

The Germans may just have caught up but at least they have moved on from where they were 10 years ago. Subaru have just stagnated, they have the same car they had 10 years ago which may in fact be a very good thing in some respects (it's definitely more involving and mechanical). Unfortunately it does still have some of the bad stuff of 10 years ago and does beg the question, what is the benefit in forking out £30k on a new one that will depreciate horribly when you can pick up a decent blob eye impreza for c£7k

That's when it gets interesting. I can imagine VW are going to lose a fair whack of money on them. They've promised a highness of lease residual value to get those low rate, then they sold thousands of them, at the same time. So they'll all come on the market....at the same time. You can't just create demand and have a high price from nowhere. You need exclusivity. This may bite them in the arse soon...
One day in 2 years time the door bell is going to ring at VW HQ and it will be a guy with several thousand red Golf R's and VW will be standing their, mouth gaping open thinking "where did all these cars come from".

You really believe they have done this without thinking down the line and are going to make a massive loss on all these cars because they have no plan?

Ironic posting? Surely mums would approve of the Golf R. Practical family hatchback that doesn't attract attention and easy to drive with little thought?

Current WRX STI is cheaper than it was in 2008.

VW have been told, more than once, to sort out their lease valuations by the big German and British banks that under write the value. They still seem incapable of controlling themselves.

Not great as a family car though - try getting a pram or pushchair in the boot!

Mines 250 a month over 24 months and to be honest its worth every penny.

Cant understand all the ludicrous hating. Its a great car, you are reading these pages because you enjoy driving so if you don't like them then there's something wrong with you.

Go and do some yoga and chill boys.
But it isn't £250, it's always 6 + or 9+

So at a 6+ deal that is another £62.5 a month over the term. So it's a £312.5 a month car, that is the real cost. Just a gripe I have!

I managed that with an RX8! Nobody can complain about a Golf after that!

Our GTI has been perfect as a family car last couple of years.

The "stage 1" figures from adding the Tuning Box to these (and the S3) is bloody amazing.

Late 3s to 60 and sub 9s to 100mph...

That's 996 Turbo fast.

I hope the M2 is decent...

No, many people are paying around £250pm all in as the deals were actually £179pm with an upfront payment of roughly £2000 at one point. Add it all together and divide by 24 you get £254pm depending on any other charges (in most cases none)

As for VW not being "Chav", VAG stuff is now the brand of choice for them as well as the middle classes these days, seen some right Dickbags hammering brand new Golf R's about as well as more genteel owners, sorry but the German car being a sign of class and taste is long gone, Audis used to be cool Volvos, not been for a long time.
