im loosing the will to live...

This and the facelift 911. Even if I had a spare massive wad of cash it'd be staying in my back pocket. There are so many mediocre expensive cars out there, I think I just wouldn't bother.

Who's buying his boring non-risk taking crap?!

The 3-series is a typical company car - so that's the market it's aimed at.

Yup, the 3 Series is to 2015 what the Ford Cortina was to 1975.

Yes. Same happened with the E46 and E90. So an LCI E46 had LED rears, yet the newer E90/E92 etc. pre LCI didn't. They take it away to give it back!

The biggest thing improvement in the 3 series LCI needs to be the interior. The bean counters clearly won over everyone else in putting the 1 series interior into the 3, despite it being a class above. I haven't seen the 1 series LCI interior, so I wonder whether the 3 LCI interior is just another copy.

Presumably people who can tell the difference between "loosing" and "losing".

Or alternatively maybe, just maybe, people who do a lot of miles and want a damn good car to do them in?

edit// And it would appear you are making this comment whilst driving a diesel Audi TT. Not sure I really need to add anything there.

Nice car regardless what the some of the haters are saying.

However, £38k seems like a lot of dosh for a 3 series. Maybe I'm just getting old?

One thing that concerns me about a lot of cars today is that they're just not designed to be maintained, and that applies to the last 10 years worth of BMWs especially. This can make them risky used buys. However, if I got one of these 340s as a company ride I'd be a happy camper.

Cars are just expensive these days but it does seem like an awful lot of money. The 330d courtesy car that I had was £44k with the options that I spotted on it. As much as I liked it, I couldn't part with that kind of money for a nice bi plain saloon.

The electronics worry me too as I tend to buy cars a few years old to allow me to get more for my money than if I bought new. I wonder how many cars will be written off at say 10/12 years due to repair costs? I'm not saying that it doesn't happen now, but there is a lot of complexity in a modern car.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest.
It is rather aloof isn't it?

£38k for a non M BMW??? Am I the only one thinking this will depreciate badly?

If I had £38k to splash on a fast practical car, I'd go for one of these: http://selekt.volvocars.co.uk/en/used-cars/Volvo/V...

And before the pedantic patrol start the argument old Vs new... it's hardly a greek relic is it!
The Previous owner of my 335i paid over £40k for it... in 2008.

All very interesting but more importantly, where can I buy the LCI cup holder with the retractable lid and replace the F30 cup holder with removable lid?

It's not £44k though is it, you wouldn’t pay that though would you?

Not the 330d but staying with the car on topic. After a brief look a new 340i M Sport Auto is £32,516, that's £7k off new. So no negotiation and 18% without too much effort.

The 340i is a bit of a bargain.

For me BMW have absolutely nailed it yet again with the 340i and their Revolution-Evolution approach in terms of model generations. Kind of reminds me of the E46 & E39 and those are cracking (BMW) cars. Mind you I would say that, since I love the brand. This 340i would be such a typical BMW in the right spec, if I had the money I would order one later today. Granted it is pricey, but I have no doubt it is a very very capable car - fun to drive and very elegant, I would probably keep it for a very long time, if in position to own one. Why would anyone consider an A4 over the 340i is beyond me, but I respect all choices. C-class has never done it for me, I don't like the XE as good as it is, so for me it's this or the new Alfa in QV form. Lovely bimmer in the right spec (six-cylinder petrol, rear-drive, manual, silver, black leather, wood inserts, xenons and sunroof is all I need) and I feel in 30 years time this could well be regarded as a classic BMW.

And why not? As far as I can see LED taillights serve no significant purpose; they are, however, a very clear say of shouting "I have a post-LCI model!". smile
They reach full illumination a fraction of a second quicker than incandescent globes. Funny thing, I remember the big thing with those red glowing instrument lights they used to have was that the eye was able to focus quicker and the brain recognise quicker on that red glow. Room for updates and glitz now rules the roost at BMW wink
The difference in illumination times works out at stopping a car length quicker at 60mph

Maybe you are, the F30 335i was just over £37k list, without options. It's about a grand for a 20hp increase, not too shabby.

Wasn't the E46 M3 338 bhp?
[/Pedant]

BMW ad tags lines of old:

"Ultimate Driving Machine"
"Power is nothing without control"

Current BMW tag line:

"Er but the engines a peach!"

Really? Via an optional extra (hopefully) you can mangle the steering?

Say, it ain't so....

I look at the title of this article and thought "WTF is a 340?". I took me a minute to remember it was just a 3 series.

I'm talking list prices, discounts are obviously variable with market fluxes and manufacturer support, not exactly conducive to suitable comparisons.
