We're talking about modern diesel cars, not an old van.
I'll say it again, I've never once experienced any smell from my car. The DPF removes any soot from the exhaust gases, so much so that I've only cleaned the exhaust tips once in 16 months and they're still sparkling.
I think we just have to agree to disagree. I had nearly new Merc E Class 250 CDI on loan for a few weeks last year. It stank when I fired it up. If I left the front door of the house open and there was a north wind it would make the house stink too.I'll say it again, I've never once experienced any smell from my car. I don't have that problem with either of my petrols.
Anyway, maybe yours is better, which is of course a good thing.
EDIT; perhaps the reason that the Merc chucked out the soot when I fired it up it that I was using in stop start London traffic, something for which it is patently not designed.

I don't want to come across all defensive of diesel cars, this is actually the first I've had and I'll be choosing a petrol hot hatch next, purely because I think they make a more enjoyable performance car. I just feel that some of the criticism levelled at them is unjustified. I tried one and happen to think the GTD is a very complete car (possibly more so than the GTIs I have owned).

As already said, try coming into London for a day. They stink. Good job they'll be banned soon. I'll say it again, I've never once experienced any smell from my car. By the way, I think you're incredibly naive if you think that will actually happen!EricE said:

Trust me, they will.
They might be banned from european city centres but I don't believe diesel cars will be banned from use anytime soon. On the other hand new taxes that render new diesel cars uneconomic to produce, that I could see.
For all those sensitive souls who are convinced that every street reeks of diesel and it's all so unfair can I suggest a time machine back to the mid 60s? Massive amount of diesel smoke from lorries, petrol smells everywhere and smog you could carve . When I were a lad.... (continues on page 87)

I thought that was caused by coal powered factories and home coal fires? Totally different to today.Possibly - but bloody everything was filthy and smelly back then. We still have coal powered power of course but I haven't seen smog for decades. I did read somewhere that a 2015 Fiesta emits about a fiftieth of the emissions the original 1976 one did. But anybody who really thinks that diesel cars smell on the inside must have dog like senses of smell . Wonder if they smell petrol too ? Must be terrible for them on public transport (whatever that is )having to tolerate other people's bodily effluvia ...
