You can map the GTD to around 230bhp so it's going to be the same sort of power, if not more, than the GTI would be anyway, and you'll still get the great MPG.

I was in this position and chose the GTI. Fingers crossed it will arrive in November

And it would still sound like a taxi.

As opposed to the generic drone and pop from a petrol Golf ? Not exactly going to be confused with a Maranello V12 or even a Milano V6 is it ?

In fairness the 2.0TFSI isn't exactly the best sounding engine in the world...

It sounds bloody awful but it propels the car down the road quite nicely, especially when the boost is turned up.

Not very taxi like to me.

I love a petrol but if you're like me and have to drive to the moon and back every day then it's just not a practical option.

I bought a GTi, on a whim, and came out of a 635d. It's a bit of an urban myth that the GTi PP has more than 230bhp stock.

It goes and steers well, if a bit frantic compared to the BMWs and Mercedes I've had in the past. I'vehad lots of petrolengines, and lots of diesels. GTi over a GTD, without question, for me.

You want this vanilla ice cream or this vanilla ice cream

Sorry...I'm just not very good with most brand new cars from VAG, just variations of bland and bore.

I think there's better value for money at new or nearly new stage

I have a GTI with performance pack, and have averaged a tiny bit over 40mpg in 6,000 miles so far. I couldn't see the point in buying the diesel.

+1 sounded exactly like a taxi to me too.

Of course it was filmed from the best place as well as you're going to get more exhaust and less engine noise from behind.
Eg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0Rt6s1YaCk at 20s especially.

Personally I'd also go for the GTi but then it'd be a cold day in hell before you'd see me buy a diesel (outside of a van or similar large slow vehicle).

GTI. On my second currently. They both did 31mpg (mixed driving) and 158mph (though not both at the same time).

Spec : Performance, alcantara cloth, stirring stick. Perfect.

GTI clearly. I bought a MK5 GTI a while back as my 5.7l Jeep was proving rather thirsty for 20k a year, it was extremely economical. 40mpg average was perfectly possible and unless you're doing 50k a year I can't really see the need for any more than that, I certainly wouldn't drive a nasty diesel to save a couple of hundred quid a year on fuel.

If you're talking about newish cars then the cost of fuel is fairly immaterial compared to the depreciation/leasing/finance costs, just get the one that's nicest to own (the GTI).
