Which reminds me, am I the only one to not like BMW //////////////M cars exhaust sound? So tinny. Needs more bass.

No I have never liked the noise the S54 makes in the Z4M/M3 either and for me its just to tinny and wasp like and the S65 in the V8 M3 sounds nothing like a V8 should either.

I love the metallic rasp from s54 etc. it's also present in some of the RS Porsche I've heard in recent years. That said, it's really the induction noise that I think makes these engines sound special.

I've never owned a V8 other than the s65, which I spent the past few months with, but I thought it was a superb engine. I loved how eagerly it revved and were it not on lease, would have looked at exhaust options. I prefer a straight six myself though.

Its all personal preference of course and I liked the way the S65 revved but to my ears it didn't sound anything like a V8 engine, I have never liked the noise the S54 makes and I still struggle to understand how I ended up buying a Z4M to be fair!

I just prefer more bass and rumble from an engine and for me its the old school American type V8`s that hit the spot most for me personally yet they are arguably the most disliked in terms of noise for the purist.

The favourite noise from a car I have had was my old X5 4.8iS and I just loved the noise it made when you revved it on the drive with the door open! cloud9

I love M cars and have had a few but I must agree, they sound pretty terrible as standard - the E46 sounds like a bag of spanners and my E92 M3 V8 sounded like a hair dryer...until I put the Miltek exhaust on! Now, it doesn't sound too loud or ridiculous (like my TVR) but it does sound, IMO, like it should have done from the factory. Just enough to remind you it's a V8.

Maybe BMW were trying to push people into their £3k sports exhaust option. Seems silly though.

is it maybe some global std to meet all emissions and sound regs? because yes, std v8 is weak

I was going to say something similar and also the direction BMW were heading with the M3 with it being more of a comfortable cruiser than anything else, at idle the E92 M3`s exhaust is all but silent apart from the cold start which was my favourite bit.

I remember going to test drive the V8 M3 years ago and I said to the dealer how muted it sounds at idle and it didn't give any clue to the fact that a V8 was under the bonnet but I suppose the market it was aimed at the punters preferred it like that.

I asked the same thing. I got told it was quiet as set up as customer could soon make the engine note louder...if it a lot harder to do the opposite. Given the sales figures, it hasn't hurt sales much!

The M4 and new M3 is a lot deeper, even on tick-over.

The AMGs and RS's sound a lot better....unless you are arriving home/setting off when the world is quiet. One of my clients with an E63 is forever trying to tip-toe down his road to avoid waking up the entire street..... and would push his car out of his garage if it could be done without turning the engine on first!

Yes plenty of owners do swap the exhaust or do the exhaust mod to give it some more volume, I think that is why I like the AMG Mercs because you pretty much know straight away that there is a nice engine under the bonnet and I like it like that, rather than BMW when they almost apologise with their muted exhaust set up.

I was massively sceptical, but on hearing it and driving both 3 & 4, road & track I really took to it. Very TVR Speed 6, throaty and rough - same bangs/pops/crackles too.

I think the Nissan Juke is ugly as sin, and completely pointless. Why get a 4x4 which is bigger than any other practical car yet doesn't offer any more space on the inside? If you really need a 4x4, the Qashqia is more than suitable.

The same goes for those bloody Evoques.

BMW build some of, if not the, very best six cylinder engines available. The s54 (especially in CSL guise) can hardly be equated to a 'bag of spanners'. Obviously the air box allows the CSL a harder edge but even the bog standard m52 can sound lovely with a little effort. Stock engines are expected to cover every base, so statistically some folk just won't like the noise they make.

E46 M3's. Probably drive great, but my god the noise they make is absolutely horrendous. To the point where I want to tear my own ears off.
MX-5's. Don't see it.. I know people adore the chassis bla bla, but it has NO POWER. Plus they're hanging to look at IMO.
Civic Type-R's. 'v-tecNO' - The amount of times I've been taken on by CTR's be it in my old Bocanegra, Megane 250 cup or now (never been beaten).. they just seem to think they're driving supercars, when really, this is what they're driving > https://www.facebook.com/LADbible/videos/236804595...

The Mazda is the opposite of an SLK 55 - great car with a poor engine, whereas the SLK is a great engine in a st car.

Good man beer

There are too few cars that have both a nice engine and a good chassis, to be honest. The GT86 also suffers from a "meh" engine.
