The P1 was mechanically based on the STi5 4 door saloon, built into a 3 door shell. It had the same running gear as the saloon with ABS and fixed rate centre diff. Prodrive worked the suspension for UK roads. Engine wise it was tested and capable of using 95 and 98RON UK fuel, the ECU uses active knock control to wind back the ignition to suit. What tends to go wrong is the MAF sensor, which is crap on the MY99/00 cars, treat it as a service item.TX.
Compared to an STi5 TypeR/RA or 22B it was a step back in driving dynamics. But it has ABS which suits more UK drivers.
The 22B was based on the STi4 Type R, for the UK Prodrive modified 16 of the JDM production run with a taller final drive ratio and a suspension package more suited to UK roads. It was also released a year later with MY99 UK headlamps because by the time Prodrive had the car ready the sales quota of Grey Imports had been filled.
I've driven so many different models of Impreza over the years, including JDM and UK 22B both on road and circuit, like all these cars to get the best out of them you need to make sure they are setup properly, it's definitely a special thing driving a 22B at the limit.
Agree that the alignment and setup was crucial - I felt this was also a service item & often resolved any issues I had.
Whatever the technical spec - I can't agree that the P1 was a step back dynamically. It always felt the other way around to me. I accept this may have been a limitation of my driving talent but I did take both cars extensively on track.
It's possible the 22b was more at home in a track environment but the P1 felt to be the superior road car which is where my cars saw most of their miles.

I do remember one of the most effective mods was putting in the Quaife front differential - that was transformative.
I did over-rev the engine on a track day so got Roger Clark to rebuild it as a 2.33 stroker with VF34 turbo. Not particularly more power (not the point) but responsive and fun.

Obviously i cant tell you what you felt, but there is no question about the better dynamics of a car with DCCD compared to one with a viscous coupling centre diff and plated rear diff. The only gain would be a damper package that worked better on the roads you used. Did you use the DCCD to tune the handling or did you just drive it on the lower green?

John - were the UK 22B Shocks/Springs completely unique to it... or did they use the same ones that were available on the WR Sport pack upgrade?
