BMW E39 530d manual in SE spec on 16" rims with 225/55 tyres. Magic carpet ride.

Proper continent crosser. It's what I've got now.

Given the choice between my M5 and the 530d for a 1000 mile motorway journey and I'd be picking up the keys for the diesel.

An A or B road thrash?

Got to be the M5....

...every time.

Same chassis but two very different cars!

Does the fact its a 95 impreza with no sound proofing say anything about my decision making abilities?

In the latest F10 530d (incl venting) you might be able to do that on one fill - M5.... 4 stops?

Another vote for the SIII Jaguar/Daimler. I have had 3 and would have another. My current X350 comes close but doesn't have quite the same ambiance.

Has to be the C7 A6 Allroad 3.0TDI 204PS that I had for a while.

Air suspension set to comfort, the Bose cranked up high and waft around on the standard 18s with high profile tyres.

Much more relaxing than the 3.0BiTDI that replaced it, because it didn't have enough power to tempt you to hoon it. It wasn't underpowered, but was no more than 'adequate'. It had the creamy 6 cylinder soundtrack though, and that's what counted.

Yet another vote for the S3 Jaguar XJ. I had a Sovereign 4.2 many moons ago. So capable, effortless and relaxing.

Another vote for the A8 4.2. Supreme waftiness, if I didn't have to turn the wheel now and again I could easily nod off.

Not owned but drove and been a passenger in a V70. easily the most comfy car I have been in. So comfy I would have to have an R design not to fall asleep.

Peugeot 309 1.3, it just loped along, no point trying to go fast as it just made more noise, good suspension and very comfortable, part of the relaxation was not giving a toss about it and couple leave it anywhere, it was a motorised Gallic shrug of a car.

Someone previously referenced a Lexus GS300 and I too found mine very relaxing with a great stereo, incredibly quiet engine and minimal wind noise.

A different car though topped that.

It was a Citroeb C5. The petrol version in Exclusive trim. It was a new car when I had it in 2002 ( company car) and it was so relaxing to drive. The seats were amazing with an armrest you pulled down like an armchair. It was Auto which added to the experience and the legendary Citroen ride coupled with 16 inch wheels and high profile tyres.

It was lovely to drive on the motorway though I accept very UN PH.

Mine's a Discovery 4 but same thing applies. Cannot be bothered to break the speed limit and get so lazy steering it with one finger sometimes yields unpredictable results.
Yep, my D3 is my choice. It's the only car I've had where I just don't get stressed at all. Super comfortable, too slow to bother with overtaking or driving fast and a feeling of isolation from the outside world. More importantly I don't feel any 'rage' towards other drivers, no matter what they've done - not that I get too excited in other cars, it's just in the D3 I'll perhaps tut to myself and carry on in comfort!

Had both a D2 A8 4.2 and S8 - both supreme, but I preferred the S8 even for wafting

With a nod to the XJ Series 3 and XJ40 I had many moons ago it's a toss up between the two cars I own now. Both very comfortable with supportive seats and a excellent ride quality, both very easy and undemanding to drive, both quiet at cruising speed and both on deeply unfashionable high profile tyres and soft suspension.

Out of the XJ8 which I do care about and Berlingo which I don't the Berlingo wins it. Not giving a st about a particular car is perhaps the most relaxing thing of all.

For me it was our '97 Subaru Outback. Lovely seats, auto box, fantastic ride quality and comfort. It could pick up its' skirts quite nicely when needed, but its natural environment was pottering around with a nice boxer burble and the heated seat set just so.

Ah, yes. Not giving a shirt about a car is another type of relaxation. In that case it would be a Mk1 Fiesta I had for a while. I really didn't care if it was missing or flattened when I returned to wherever I left it.
